Sophomore Parent Meeting
  • Bryan High School Guidance Night
  • 2009-2010

Academics
  • The foundation for GPA and class rank has been
    laid. This is the year to bring it up. It gets
    harder to raise each year.
  • If your child failed a required course during
    their Freshman year and did NOT do summer school,
    their options this year are
  • STEP Ahead (1st or 2nd semester)
  • Correspondence with American Schools
  • Virtual Learning
  • Re-take the class

HOBY
  • Hugh OBrian Youth Leadership Award
  • Takes place late October/early November
  • Students will complete an application with essay
    and then be narrowed down for an interview.
  • Benefits of HOBY
  • Attend HOBY Seminar at Ohio Northern in June
  • Opportunity to strengthen leadership skills
  • Name on plaque in academic awards case

PLAN
  • Designed to provide career insight and predict
    potential ACT success
  • If students plan to take the ACT, it is
    recommended they take the PLAN
  • Will be given December 3rd and 4th
  • Sign up is first come basis (will test 100)
  • The cost is 10 and students may start signing up
    with Mr. Grime on November 2nd

PSAT
  • The top 20 of class will be invited to take the
    PSAT as a Sophomore on October 14th.
  • Cost is 13. Money must be turned into office by
    Sept. 23rd.
  • This is offered to allow them practice for Junior
    year when they will have the option to take it
    again for National Merit awards.

ACT
  • Not recommended until April or June and only for
    those in upper level math classes (Reminder that
    April date is first day of Spring Break).
  • If taking as a Sophomore, hold off on taking
    writing portion until Junior year.
  • See a counselor for a packet several weeks before
    date to avoid paying late fees or register online
    at www.act.org.

OGT
  • Ohio Graduation Test will be given March
    15th-19th.
  • Must pass all 5 sections for graduation (please
    note that there are exceptions to this rule).
  • Practice OGT will be given before Christmas
    break.
  • Students who do not pass the practice tests will
    be recommended to participate in after school OGT
    prep sessions that normally run 2-3 weeks prior
    to the test.

Four County Career Center
  • Offers a wide range of vocational/technical
    career training programs.
  • Many programs qualify for Tech Prep and Dual
    Enrollment credit that earns students college
    credit from NWSCC so long as they meet grade
    requirements.
  • ALL Sophomores will visit Four County on December
    4th. There will be a parent/student open house
    on January 11th.

Four County Career Center
  • Applications are due Feb. 1st.
  • Students must have 6.5 credits at time of
    application to be placed into a program and must
    have 8 credits by the beginning of Junior year to
    attend.
  • Many programs have course grade and GPA
    requirements.

Four County Career Center
  • Policy requires students scheduled to attend Four
    County MUST go the first 10 days before deciding
    to return to BHS.
  • If students are unsure about attending, they are
    encouraged to apply to Four County and register
    for BHS classes. If they do not register at BHS,
    they are locked into going to Four County.
  • Please be aware that there are program and
    uniform fees at Four County. There is support
    for fees to students on free/reduced lunch.
