What causes Earthquakes?

• Most earthquakes are caused by lithosphere plates
  moving against each other.
• There are 3 types of earthquake faults

• Magnitude is the measure of the amplitude of an
  earthquakes wave.

How Earthquakes are measured

• Richter Scale
• Measures the amplitude of an earthquakes wave.
• Magnitude depends on amount of energy that is
  stored.

Magnitude

• Magnitude scales are logarithmic which means that
  each increase of one point on the Ricther scale
  is 10 times increase of wave amplitude
• One point increase also means an increase of 30
  energy.

How Earthquakes are measured

• Modified Mercalli Scale
• Depends on how strong an earthquake felt.
• It also is measured by how much damage it did at
  any given location.
