- The following chart shows the yearly targets all
Washington schools and districts need to meet in
fourth grade on the reading and math WASL in
order to make annual yearly progress as defined
by the US Dept. of Education. The targets
increase every three years reaching 100 in 2014. - Mercer Island as a district and each school
individually continue to exceed the targets in
all grades and subjects. Generally our scores
meet the targets for 2010-2012.

20Disaggregation of WASL Scores
- Gender
- Ethnicity
- Skill Strands
21GRADE 4
GRADE 7
GRADE 10
Within a small district some changes over time
are expected, but we do not see any sustained
gender gap in reading at any grade level.
22GRADE 4
GRADE 7
GRADE 10
At grades 4 and 7 we see a gender gap in favor of
girls in writing. This is consistent with
national trends. The gap closes by 10th grade.
23GRADE 4
GRADE 7
GRADE 10
Within a small district some changes over time
are expected, but we do not see any sustained
gender gap in math at any grade level.
24Charts for each grade and content area are in the
appendix. In almost all cases they show
performance moving steadily into level 4.
25Note There were less than 10 students of any
other ethnicity who took the WASL at any grade
level.
Our Asian students constitute about 5 of our
population. There is no meaningful difference in
their WASL scores compared to Caucasian students.
26How many Mercer Island Students are Not at
Standard on the WASL?
27MIHS students performed as well as or better than
all of the districts identified in the 2005-06
Benchmark Study with the exception of Bellevue
International School which is a magnet school and
not comparable in student population.
28Report on Student Achievement 2006-2007
- TerraNova Mathematics Assessment
29All students were tested on the math curriculum
they studied in 2005-06. TerraNova scores for
regular grade level are comparable to ITBS scores
in previous years. This is despite the fact that
the ITBS included all students at a grade level
whereas these scores do not include accelerated
math students. Their scores are presented in the
next table.
30Whereas the TerraNova scores for regular grade
level are comparable to ITBS scores in previous
years, our accelerated students had much higher
scores than expected. The District Assessment
Advisory Committee will consider the implications
of this finding.
