Association of Competitive Telecom Operators
IPv6 TELCOs Workshop On IPv6
New Delhi 21st July 2009

Introduction
  • ACTO is an industry association formed by
    several leading long
  • distance carriers that predominately provide
    data connectivity
  • services to the Enterprise market segment.
  • ACTO members provide enterprise services to
    multi-sited
  • corporations, Indian BPO outsourcing and ITES
    sector operating
  • global networks.
  • ACTO is committed to further Indias
    pro-competitive policies
  • and to partner closely with DoT and other
    Govt. Agencies to enhance the
  • stakeholders engagement with the specific
    needs of the
  • enterprise segment.
  • ACTO is a registered entity under Societies
    Registration Act.
  • ACTO founder members are ATT Global Network

India , Cable Wireless Network Network Ltd.,
Equant Network Services India Pvt. Ltd (Orange

    India Private Ltd.

3
why should enterprises care about IPv6?
  • IPv4 addresses are expected to run out
    within the next few years.
  • Telecom Industry coming out of a major
    recession relentless technological change
    changing regulatory environment consolidation
    globalization.
  • The next multibillion revenue opportunities
    imply IP based network convergence,
    multi-functional end-devices, always on, always
p2p reachable, mobile and endowed with end to
    end security.
  • A new addressing scheme called IPv6 that
substantially increases the number of IP
addresses available. By using a 128-bit address
space, there are 2128 IPv6 IP addresses. for
every person on earth and they won't run out.

4
Five reasons why Telco should care about IPv6
  • New innovative applications The massive address
space provided by IPv6 will enable a brand new
range of applications, particularly in the field
    of machine-to-machine (M2M) communication and
sensor networks. IPv6 is essential for any
application that requires a large number of
    networked devices.
  • More efficient addressing IPv6 is essential for
any application that requires a large number of
networked devices. The larger address space of
IPv6 means that companies can do away with
network address translation (NAT) and give each
    device a unique IP address.
  • Protect your investment It's only a matter of
time before IPv6 replaces existing IP addressing,
which means that you need to consider its impact
    on the entire infrastructure lifecycle.

Five reasons why Telco should care about IPv6
(cont..)
Optimized transition costs Migration to IPv6
should be carried out gradually as it will give
you time to build up experience, and keep
mistakes and transition costs to a minimum.
Enterprises will need to carry out a detailed
assessment of the impact IPv6 will have on their
applications and infrastructure. International
context Multinational enterprises need to be
aware that some countries are adopting IPv6
earlier than others. In China, for example, the
government is a keen advocate of IPv6, having
already launched a large IPv6 network connecting
25 universities across the country as far back as
2004. The EU also has ambitious targets for IPv6
and all EU bodies and US, the Department of
Defence to switch to IPv6 by 2010.
6
IPv6 Telecom Enterprises
  • A transition to the Internet Protocol version 6
(IPv6) from the current Internet Protocol version
4 (IPv4) offers various benefits to the large
    telecom enterprises.
  • To marked improvement in routing
  • Inherent security
  • The auto-configuration capabilities
  • Promises lower cost in deployment, maintenance
    and Operations.
  • Leading to significant cost savings in the
    long-term for business telecom
    enterprises.

7
Benefit of IPv6 to Telecom Enterprises
  • Larger address space
  • Better header format
  • New options
  • Allowance for extension
  • Support for resource allocation
  • Support for more security

8
Ipv6 Data Security
  • Security is a major concern in every part of the
    Internet, covering areas like-
  • Encryption
  • Detection of intrusion
  • Access control
  • Authentication
  • Authorization
  • Integrity protection

9
Ipv6 Data Security (Cont..)
  • All implementations required to support
    authentication and encryption
  • headers
  • Authentication separate from encryption for use
    in situations where
  • encryption is prohibited or prohibitively
    expensive
  • Key distribution protocols
  • Support for manual key configuration required
