Title: Proposals and Plans for Run II b

1
Proposals and Plans forRun II b
  • Michael Schmidt
  • 21 September 2000

2
Definition of Run II b
  • Run II a begins March 2001 and ends when we have
collected approximately 2 inverse fb of data.
  • Run II b consists of the data we can collect
prior to when LHC experiments take over
  • Laboratory guidance
  • Plan for 15 inverse fb to be delivered to CDF
    (and D0) in the interval 2001 - 2007
  • Plan for any required upgrades to be installed in
one shutdown of 6 months duration to occur
    sometime in 2003 - 2004
  • Required upgrades are those necessary in order to
maintain Run II a capabilities into Run II b
  • Expect funding to be limited e.g. 2.5M for
    silicon replacement including contingency

3
Request from the Laboratory
  • Define the scope of the required upgrades very
    soon
  • These plans should require limited RD with
realistic goals, and minimize the time needed
    for installation and commissioning
  • Present our plans at the Fall PAC meeting
    (November 3-5)
  • Participate in the evaluation of the demand for
and available resources of the SiDet facility
    over the next several years
  • Anticipate that careful planning and oversight of
the detector upgrade projects, in close
    coordination with accelerator upgrade
projects will be essential for success

4
Run 2b Committee
  • Members
  • Gerry Bauer Takashi Ohsugi
  • Giorgio Chiarelli Luciano Ristori
  • Frank Chlebana Michael Schmidt (Chair)
  • Henry Frisch Jeff Spalding
  • Mike Lindgren Avi Yagil
  • Pat Lukens
  • Charge Review proposals for replacement of
radiation damaged silicon detectors and other
    necessary upgrades
  • Provide the recommendations to the Spokespeople
and the collaboration on action for these
    proposals, establishing the physics benefits,
cost and schedule, and relative priorities for
    these proposals

5
Run 2b Proposal Timeline
  • July 21, 2000 Request from Laboratory
  • August 12, 2000 Formation of Run 2b committee
  • Proposals for silicon replacement
  • September 1 First Draft
  • September 30 Proposal with options
  • Proposals for other upgrades
  • September 15 First Draft or Expression of
    Interest
  • November 15 Proposal
  • October 2 Committee status report
  • November 3-5 Fall PAC meeting
  • Spring 2001 Written report with overall
    recommendations
  • April 20-22 Spring PAC meeting

6
Reasons for Attention to Run 2b Upgrades NOW
  • The inner layers of silicon will be compromised
after several inverse fb of dosage (see Joes
    talk)
  • What IF the Higgs is actually just around the
    corner ??
  • Best studies Ive seen suggest that a 5 sigma
discovery requires about 5 inverse fb for M100
GeV, 10 at 110 GeV, and 23 at 130 GeV
  • If we havent learned by now that even the
simplest thing takes a lot longer than one would
hope, we are simply not trainable
  • We need to influence the laboratories priorities
  • When DO we get go to 132 nsec operation?
  • How do we get at least 15 inverse fb if NUMI,
KTEV and BTEV are also coming online in the Run
    2b period?

7
Already Under Review
  • First Drafts (one document)
  • Silicon replacement options J. Incandela co.
  • Pixel option for Layer 00 W. Wester co.
  • Expressions of Interest
  • Replacement for muon scintillators (CSP, CSX) G.
    Pauletta co.
  • RPCs
  • Replacement for central preradiator detector
    (CPR) J. Huston co.
  • WLS fibers in MINOS extruded scintillator
  • Projective COT K. Pitts co.
  • Deadening the sense wires of inner layers at high
    z (large eta)
  • Track Trigger Upgrade K. Pitts co.
  • Track triplets and inclusion of stereo
    information

8
Some Key Issues
  • Silicon
  • Understand the bracket of the survival range for
    the silicon layers
  • Provide the laboratory with a clear message with
regard to the issue of replacing the SVX3 chip
with a radiation hard version or substitute
  • Integrated tracking plan
  • Pattern recognition and reconstruction issues
  • How many two sided layers (not double sided)
  • Pixels
  • Triggering issues (e.g. continued benefit from
    SVT)
  • Avoiding the pitfalls of a piecemeal approach to
    the upgrades

9
More Issues
  • Making sure the upgrades are physics driven
  • What are the physics topics to push for in Run II
    b?
  • Get it down in one place -- a micro TDR ?
  • Overall capabilities (anticipated limitations?)
    of trigger and DAQ systems
  • This is one of the (many) places where we are
expecting to learn from the commissioning run
and lot more once Run II a starts
  • S. Vejcik co. have expressed an interest in
    this broad set of issues
  • So many more ...

10
Committee Plan
  • Evaluate information in hand and iterate
  • Formulate our recommendations as best we can in
the context of an overall upgrade strategy
    driven by the physics
  • Seek and enlist help from the collaboration
  • Find a way to reach our goal and avoid
having this icon represent CDFs efforts
