The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF)
  • Established in 1986, the Canadian Breast Cancer
    Foundation is the leading national
    volunteer-based organization in Canada dedicated
to creating a future without breast cancer.
  • Largest fundraiser is the CIBC Run For The Cure
  • 5 Kilometer race
  • 36 Canadian cities
  • 150,000 runners
  • Over 30,000,000 raised annually

3
Previous Technology
  • CBFC was using a web interface to allow people to
register for the run make donations online.
  • Appealing and user friendly, but was not
effective when it came to presenting data to
    organizers.
  • Printing out data reports took time and money as
reports would reach 500 pages a day.

4
Implementation
  • Crystal Report software
  • Allowed for data access, formatting, and
delivering information inside and outside the
    CBFC.
  • Dramatically cut down time and resources required
for volunteers to process registrations and
    donations.
  • Spared hours of data entry and paper transactions
due to online .PDF tax receipts.
  • Saved mailing printing costs.

5
Crystal Reports is
  • A Business Intelligence application used to
design and generate reports from a wide range of
    data sources.
  • Based on the common "band" model of report
writers where different bands represent different
    totaling levels.
  • Total band (upper, start)
  • -------------------------
  • Sub-Total Band (upper)
  • -------------------------
  • Detail Band
  • -------------------------
  • Sub-Total Band (lower)
  • -------------------------
  • Total band (lower, end)

IT Requirements for growing firms
  • INPUT ? PROCESS ? OUTPUT
  • In a small firm, a simplistic infrastructure can
be used, as a very small amount of data is being
processed, with more human interaction used.
  • As firms grow data increases, therefore
    infrastructures become more sophisticated, as
human interaction is supplemented with mechanical
    processes.
  • Implementing software such as Crystal Reports
will solve this problem as data can be
presented in a clear, easy to read way.

7
Scalability
  • Scalability is the ability of a computer
application or product to continue to function
well when it is changed in size or volume in
order to meet a user need. Therefore, firms need
    to determine
  • Their traffic at its possible highest and lowest
  • Their user needs
  • Applications to be carried out by software
  • Possible future expansion
  • Upgradeability of application
  • Therefore, CBCF should have predicted this
problem earlier, in order to have efficiently
handled the dramatic increase in user traffic and
    data processing.
