Title: Accelerated Reader at Evergreen 6

1
Accelerated Reader at Evergreen 6
  • A program to get students reading throughout the
school year both at home and at school.

2
How does Accelerated Reader Work?
  • 1. Student Reads a Book. Students choose books at
their appropriate reading levels and read them at
    their own pace.
  • 2. Student Takes a Quiz. Accelerated Reader
Enterprise offers more than 100,000 quizzes to
help you motivate and monitor increased reading
    practice.
  • 3. We Get Information. We get immediate
information feedback on the reading and
vocabulary progress of each student based on how
they perform on the tests taken.

3
The STAR Test
  • Each student is given a level from which they
should select books to read on their own. The
A.R. level is based on the STAR assessment, which
    is given once a quarter.

4
A.R. Level, Range and Goal
  • Based on the results of the STAR test, each
    student is given
  • an A.R. level (eg., 5.8)
  • a reading range (eg., 4.0-6.5)
  • and a points goal (eg. 110 points)
  • The A.R. level represents the highest level a
    student can read independently.
  • The reading range indicates the range of levels
the student should choose books from.
  • The points goal represents the number of points
the student should earn by reading on-level books
and passing A.R. tests by the end of the school
    year.
  • A.R. goals are written on the inside back cover
of students planners at the beginning of the
    school year.

5
A.R. Requirements
  • At Evergreen 6, students are required to read a
minimum of 2 hours outside of class.
  • We recommend students read 30 minutes each night,
    Monday-Thursday.
  • Students are required to record their reading in
the Reading column of their planners.

6
All about tests points!
  • To earn points, students pass take a
    comprehension test.
  • A.R. tests may be taken A.R. time each week on
any of the computers in the lab.
  • Each homeroom will have one day a week they can
take tests and check books in or out.
  • Tuesdays- BEHLKES homeroom
  • Wednesdays- HOLMANS homeroom
  • Thursdays- SNYDERS homeroom
  • Students may only take an A.R. test on a book
that has been logged in the Reading section of
their planner and your homeroom teacher must sign
your planner before you take the test.
  • A.R. tests may only be taken once- if a student
does not pass a test, they can not take it again
and they can not improve their score on a test
    either.
  • Students can only take a test for a book they
    read this school year.

7
Incentives Rewards for Keeping Up!
  • FUN FRIDAY REWARDS!!! Students who are on track
with their A.R. goal will be allowed to choose
the activities theyd like to participate in on
    Fun Friday.
  • Students who are behind or not keeping up with
their reading goals will READ during Fun Friday
    to catch up.
  • Starting at the beginning of each school year,
Evergreen 6 holds a competition for the TOP 5
A.R. READERS. This competition is based on the
percentage each student earns of their reading
    goal.
  • The 5 students who come closest to reaching or
who surpass their A.R. goal by the most, win
either a fabulous lunch / ice cream date or a
sailing trip on Lake Oroville with the teachers
    during Spring Break!
  • The winners also get their names on a plaque that
hangs on the wall of the E6 office.
  • CAMP NIGHT HIKE!!! Everyone who reached 100 of
their A.R. goal by Fri., May 23 will be invited
on the Night Hike at Camp.

8
We Have A.R. Enterprise!
  • E6 has purchased A.R. Enterprise, a web-based
version of the program. This program allows us
access to all A.R. tests ever written and is
updated frequently with new tests as they are
added. We currently have access to over 100,000
    tests!!

9
Choosing a Book to Read
  • When choosing a book, it is suggested that
students pick a book within or close to their
    A.R. reading range.
  • Always choose a book that you think will be
interesting to you. DO NOT choose a book just
because it is worth a lot of points!
  • Pace yourself to finish a book about every two
weeks. Make sure you always have a spare book on
hand in case you finish a book early!

10
Reaching your Goal- a Yearlong Commitment!
  • Dont cheat yourself- read 2 hours or more a week
at home (30 min. a night, 4 nights a week)
  • If you fall behind now, it becomes very difficult
to catch up! Keep up by reading consistently all
    year long!
  • Remember to read books that are within your range
and that you will enjoy, this ensures you will
    pass the tests.
  • Make up your mind to have fun with your reading!
We are all going to do this, we might as well
    enjoy it!
