Guild of Australia to assist patients to take
their medicines properly and help them with their
    medicines regimen.
  • A MedsIndex Score is created from a computer
software tool used by the pharmacist with input
data from the pharmacy dispensary profile to
    track compliance.
  • A MedsIndex Score calculates how much medicine
the doctor intended the patient to take, compared
to how much has been dispensed.

4
1.What Is
  • MedsIndex gives a score out of 100 and there are
four bands which give patients and pharmacists
an indication on which support program to
    recommend

5
1. What Is
  • The MedsIndex report gives a visual indication of
compliance and patients can clearly see how they
rate compared to the four indicative bands
  • The report on the right is indicative for a
patient on 5 medicines with varying degrees of
    compliance

6
2. Evidence To Support
  • When you DO NOT take your prescribed medicines
properly one or more of the following may occur
  • You may not get better
  • Your condition may worsen
  • You may have a relapse

7
Evidence To Support
  • Research shows that 50 to 70 of patients DO NOT
    take their medicines properly
  • That is they either
  • DO NOT take them at all
  • DO NOT take them correctly in order to get the
    best effect.

3. Non-Compliance vs. Adherence
  • NON COMPLIANCE
  • Refers to a patient NOT TAKING a prescribed
medicines or following a prescribed course of
    therapy
  • ADHERENCE
  • Refers to HOW WELL a patient is following the
    recommendations of their doctor/pharmacist when
taking their prescribed medicines or following a
    prescribed course of therapy

Adherence Compliance have the same meaning

    stop treatment due to

  • believe regimen ineffective
  • Regimen too complex
  • fear of addiction, side effects, toxicity
  • medicines too expensive

11
Non-Compliance Guild Research
  • In August 2007 Pharmacy Guild Research showed
  • 41 of Australians stopped taking prescribed
medicines before they were meant to on at least
    one occasion.
  • More than 50 of those who have previously
stopped taking a prescribed medicine indicated it
was because they were of the opinion that it was
    not needed
  • 42 stopped due to side effects they had been
    experiencing.
