SEJUMACBA
  • By Steve Hewitt

2
We have a problem
  • According to the American Religious
Identification Survey, the percent of individuals
in America that identify themselves as being a
Christian has fallen by 10 since 1990.
  • 150,000 churches in America have not see a single
addition as a result of a first time commitment
to Christ in 2 years. For the average church, 86
of new membership is just Christians changing to
    a new church.

3
Our Mission
  • A call to train or disciple their members in the
    teachings of Christ
  • A call to evangelize or reach their community
    with the message of salvation
  • A call to grow and encourage the body of Christ
    through fellowship and commitment
  • A call to gather together to worship God
  • A call to involve their congregation in service
    and missions

Personal Communication Age
  • People in their 50s and above use the Internet
for TWO things, email and web searches
  • People in their 40s and below, use it for EIGHT
things. Email, web searches, IM, Social
    Networking, Podcasting, Texting, sharing videos,
    and blogging.
  • This is very important, because the additional
six uses all represent NEW ways to communicate.

6
Generation Gap
  • Pew Research just released a report that stated
we NOW have a generation gap greater than that of
    the 1960s
  • Cool Daddy-o
  • Now it is not the specific terms, the technology
    methods!

7
Communication
  • Broadcast Media is dying TV, Radio, Print
  • Narrowcast Media is thriving
  • Social Networking
  • Video
  • Podcasting
  • Short-code Texting
  • Viral emails
  • Blogs

8
People want to have input
  • The success of blogging
  • Facebook wall posting, comments and bits
  • Posting of pictures and videos

9
People trust peers friends
  • Walt Wilson explains it this way, Americans no
longer view truth as objective reality. Modern
society and certainly our political leadership
support the language of ambiguity. The line
between right and wrong is no longer as clear as
it once was or should be. Political leaders in
the United States think spin is morally
acceptable manipulation of truth. The absence of
truth breeds skepticism. (The Internet Church,
    page 59)

10
Mobile Computing
  • Something Important
  • Windows 3.1
  • Internet
  • Mobile Computing
  • Notebook sales are flatline
  • New research shows 58 of Americans access the
    Internet wirelessly
  • Smartphone sales are rocketing
  • This is changing the way we communicate using
    technology. Texting!

11
We need to help move forward to new communication
tools
  • In 1995 I was invited to visit the Second Baptist
    Church of Phoenix.
  • Now email is dead, narrowcasting is king. We need
to help our congregations move forward, NOT
because it is the neatest new gadget, but because
it is the way to communicate to our communities.
  • Fishing for trout!

12
People are looking for answers
  • 60 - 85 of people turn to the Internet when it
comes to seeking answers for life changing
    events.
  • Would they find your church

13
Our Response
  • Andrew Careaga, in his book, Connecting with the
Net Generation eMinistry, states, To reach
these online seekers of God and to draw the
cyber-church into the fold, the traditional
church must do the following three things.
  • We must enter the world of these cyber-seekers.
We must learn about them and from them to
understand how they respond to the workings of
    this new medium.
  • We must strive to understand the medium itself
and its place and influence in our culture.
  • We must consider how we as the church should
respond to the Nets growing influence in
    society. (pg 23-24)

14

Texting

sent from cell phones than voice messages
