Title: Sarah Davey Chesters

1
Welcome
  • Sarah Davey Chesters
  • University of Southern Queensland

2
Since the dawn of time
3
Just a little about myself.
  • I have a background in Philosophy and Education
    not ICT but
  • So now I am going to get you to think a little
about ICT in a very different way.

4
To begin with
  • To understand how much technology impacts on our
lives, move around the room until I tell you to
stop. Introduce yourself to someone new and tell
them about one technology that you couldnt live
without and why. I will tell you when you can
move on to the next person.
  • My favourite piece of technology, a stop-watch
and bell will indicate when to move on.

5
An extension of the self?
  • We may think that we each have remarkable
abilities (we have certainly come a long way
since the scene at the beginning of this
session!) but would we be able to do so much
    without technology?
  • We may see information and communication
technology as simply a computer industry, but
what if we think of it as a tool for human
    extension.

6
Did you know..
  • Information and Communications Technology
    includes
  • People Management
  • Digital Games Design
  • Web and Multimedia
  • Software Development

7
So what is this all about?
  • Is technology simply a tool for the extension of
    human ability?
  • Think about this
  • The doctor who operates through a network
    connection
  • What about the musician who creates arias with
    his fingertips
  • An architect who can see a 3-Dimensional view of
    his design
  • A group of friends who are connected after years
of losing track of each other.

8
And the winner is
  • The annual human achievement awards are upon us
again and it is up to you to decide who should be
    given this prestigious award.
  • Should this be given to the person operating the
technology or the person who designed the
technology? With the other people on your table
    reflect on the aforementioned examples.

9
What does ICT mean to you?
  • To end, let us test some of the assumptions that
we hold about technology and specifically
    information and communications technology.
  • Are these examples of ICT? Why or why not
  • Pen and paper
  • A pair of tongs
  • A mobile phone
  • Two cans connected by rope by young children
  • A guitar
