KNOWLEDGE BASED DISTRIBUTED PRODUCT DESIGN AND
MANUFACTURING
EU Asia Link Project (ASI/B7-301/98/679-023) Web
-Enabled Collaboration in Intelligent Design and
Manufacturing Postgraduate School, 5th to 12th
January 2006, Harbin, P.R. China
2
Introduction
  • Currently most of Design and Manufacturing
management systems work with local and static
databases, and do not involve knowledge from
    whole value chain.
  • Distributed Design and Manufacturing becoming
usual in a globalised world Platforms needed
    co-ordinating geographically dispersed designers
    and manufacturers.
  • Application developed based on product/process
knowledge for distributed product design and
    manufacturing with dynamic database.

3
System architecture
4
PDM - Dynamic database
  • Product Data Management
  • JAVA Application for MS Windows performing basic
    PDM features
  • Centralizes distributed product design and
    manufacturing process
  • Dynamic Database
  • MS Access databases storing product and process
    information

5
PDM main features
  • Management of assembly structure, classification
of parts, as components of an assembly, and
    related documents.
  • Creation of new projects and subprojects related.
  • Management of the information related to
    documents name, type, project, description,
    owner, revision, date, etc.
  • Product lifecycle control, considering different
states for the documents (design, manufacturing,
    pending revision, obsolete, etc).
  • File access, reading and writing permissions for
external users with the knowledge database in
    the server.

9
Dynamic Database
  • Product information Assembly structure,
information related to assembly, parts and
    documents.
  • Process information Manufacturing process,
Design rules and other process parameters.
  • Permissions for reading and
  • writing managed by PDM
  • application.
  • Based on MS Access.

10
Knowledge Based Engineering
  • Knowledge-Based systems allow companies capture
and reuse knowledge, and deal with product
    engineering design, manufacturing, cost
estimations, best practices, legal issues, etc.
  • KBE module developed focused on manufacturing
process parameters to be applied into product
    design. Manufacturing remote knowledge
    automatically applied by designers.

11
KBE module developed
  • Main features
  • Integrated with PDM Dynamic Database.
  • KBE module developed for Forging process.
  • Forging design rules automatically applied by
remote designers for several rotational families
(flash land, preform volume, draft angles, convex
    radius).

12
Forging design rules
13
Process and Geometric parameters
14
Knowledge Based Automatic Design
  • Design rules parameters defined by manufacturer
    are automatically applied by designers.
  • API must be developed for each specific CAD
    package considered (SolidWorks).
  • Geometry CAD template automatically updated with
    remote manufacturing rules parameters.

15
Knowledge Based Automatic Design
  • SolidWorks geometry template for family 2

16
Conclusions
  • Collaborative design and manufacturing process,
    applying remote knowledge from manufacturer
    into the design stage.
  • Dynamic database incorporated where authorised
users are able to modify/update product and
    process information.

17
Current and Future Work
  • Approaches for detection of product/process
    problems. Classical approaches (FMEA), innovative
    approaches (AFD-TRIZ).
  • Other manufacturing processes to be considered,
developing specific KBE modules (e.g. Parallel
    Kinematic Machine).
  • Real case study based in PKM process in
    collaboration with HIT.
