BART Improves the Environment
  • BARTs 43 stations provide a regional backbone
    for additional Transit-Oriented Development (TOD)
allowing people to live closer to transit and
reduce Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) by 40.
  • Riding BART helps the environment
  • BART is 100 electric with majority of power
    coming from clean hydro sources.
  • Commuting by BART instead of cars avoids spewing
44 lbs of pollutants per passenger per day.
  • BART riders get 250 mpg -- with total ridership
daily saving 202,000 gallons of gas.
  • Reduces regions carbon footprint BART riders
save over 400,000 metric tons of CO2 annually.

In the Bay AreaBART Improves the Environment
Thats 4.5 million blimps of CO2 saved per year.
Thank You BART Riders!
8
2008 Challenges Opportunities
  • Critical Core System
  • Reinvestment Needs
  • 2. Meeting Growing Ridership Demand
  • 3. New Environmental Goals Opportunities

9
System Reinvestment Building Capacity
  • BART must upgrade many of its vital operating
systems and infrastructure that have been in
continuous operation since service began in 1972
  • System reinvestment projects include
  • Replace vehicles 669 rail cars
  • Renovate railway propulsion power and ventilation
    systems
  • Renovate/replace train control and communication
    systems
  • Renovate/replace elevators and escalators
  • Repair structural and architectural problems in
    stations
  • Expand and reconfigure station access
  • Improve tracks and platforms
  • Renovation and replacement will require
    additional sources of funding

10
BART Critical Reinvestment Needs
  • 8 Billion 25-year reinvestment program
  • Over 2 billion of BARTs funded capital
    reinvestment program comes through operator
    efforts
  • BARTs capital shortfall is 2.4 billion

  • FIX WHAT WE HAVE FIRST -- build on past
    investments.
  • Increase BARTs capacity to meet a growing Bay
    Area.
  • Educate the public and Bay Area policymakers
about BARTs role in meeting new environmental
goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and
