Marine Debris Database
  • Mapping with Google Earth

45
Purpose
  • Provide a record of debris accumulations, past
cleanup effort, and provide a tool to assist in
    planning cleanups and resource allocation.

46
Funding
  • MCAF is funded by NOAA to establish and maintain
a statewide marine debris database. We actively
solicit the inclusion of all MD information in
    this data base.

47
2 Map Views
  • QuickMap The QuickMap is a simplified online
version of the Marine Debris Database.
  • Simple overview
  • Available directly on the web
  • Highlights main areas and projects
  • MasterMap Get into the guts of the program.
  • Information has been entered for the 2007
cleanup year, 2008 cleanup report entry is in
    progress.
  • Detailed project information
  • Increased maneuverability
  • Faster data access
  • Download and open with Google Earth

48
How do you read the map?
  • Color Coded Surveys Cleanups
  • Quicklook
  • Project Reports
  • Beach Reports

49
Color Coded Surveys Cleanups
  • Surveys show debris accumulation levels using
the yellow to red spectrum. Cleanups are shown in
    the white to green spectrum.

50
Quicklook
  • Quicklook Highlights show a simple view of high,
    medium and low accumulation areas.
  • Helpful Hint
  • Submit a map with
  • cleaned areas marked.

51
Project Reports
  • Project Reports are summaries of the project
    with photos and graphs.
  • Submitted reports are used to create project
    reports.

52
Beach Reports
Summaries of individual beaches cleaned will be
collected from MCAF cleanup cards. Information
includes
  • Date
  • Beach debris cleanup totals (weight and length of
    beach)
  • Debris accumulation (High, Medium, or Low)
  • Type of debris
  • Latitude Longitude OR a map with beach name and
    cleanup noted area.
  • Photos - Include beach names in the title
  • Note interesting or unique features (marine
    mammals, non-removable debris, ease of
    access for cleanup crew, etc.)

53
Pick a reporting form
  • MCAF Marine Debris Beach or Bay Reports
  • Marine Debris Cleanup Data Card
  • Aerial Survey Log

54
MCAF Marine Debris Beach or Bay Reports
  • Simple
  • Easy
  • One report per beach or small island

55
Marine Debris Cleanup Data Card
  • 2 page reporting form
  • Good for detailed surveys
  • One report per beach or small island
