Title: Primary, Secondary, Monochromatic, Analogous, Contrast, Complimentary, Warm, Cool

1
The Color Wheel
  • Primary, Secondary, Monochromatic, Analogous,
    Contrast, Complimentary, Warm, Cool Neutral.

2
The Color Wheel

3
The Color Wheel
  • Color wheels show how visible colors are
related. Primary, secondary, and intermediate colo
rs are organized on a circular chart. Color
wheels help artists remember how to mix and think
    about pigments.

4
Primary Colors
  • Primary colors consist of Yellow, Blue, and Red.
Primary colors cannot be made from other colors
rather, all other colors can be made by primary
    colors.

5
Secondary Colors
  • The secondary colors are green, orange and violet
(purple). A secondary color is made by mixing two
    primary colors

6
Monochromatic
  • A single color is used, varied in saturation and
    lightness for several different contrasting
shades. One problem with this color scheme is
that it is difficult to make anything stand out,
and the lack of contrast can get monotonous.

7
Analogous
  • Here you use the color wheel to pick two colors
that are side-by-side. One becomes the dominant
color and the other is used to accent. The
overall effect is much like the monochrome scheme
but offers more hues. However, it still lacks
    contrast.

8
Contrast
  • Contrast is one of the principles of art which
creates excitement and interest in artworks. Two
things that are very different have a lot of
contrast. White and black have the greatest
contrast. Complementary colors also have high
contrast. Artists may also choose low contrast
    for a softer look.

9
Complimentary
  • Using the color wheel, complimentary colors are
found opposite each other. This creates high
contrast. Again one of the two colors should be
dominant. This color scheme is harder to balance
in a pleasing way than the aforementioned
    schemes.

10
Warm Colors
  • Warm colors are made mostly of red, orange and
yellow. This family of colors is called warm
because they remind you of warm things like the
sun or fire. Warm colors can even make you feel
warmer because they can slightly increase your
    circulation and body temperature!

11
Cool Colors
  • Cool colors are made mostly of green, blue and
violet (purple). Cool colors can even make you
feel cooler because they can slightly decrease
    your circulation and body temperature!

12
Neutral Colors
  • Neutral colors or earth tones are not seen on
most color wheels. Black, gray, whites are
neutral. Browns, beiges and tans are sometimes
    neutral too.
  • Artists use warm, cool and neutral colors to
create moods, show contrast and create depth in
    artworks.

13
Your Assignment
  • On a piece of bristol board, student will create
a color wheel with paint and place it in the
    center.
  • Surrounding the wheel, section your paper into 9.
Each section will provide an example of
    Primary, Secondary, Monochromatic, Analogous,
    Contrast, Complimentary, Warm, Cool Neutral.
  • Each section will also provide an example of the
elements and principles of design. Some may be
    combined (Ex. Texture and Form)
