Title: Diamond formation using Fe3C as a carbon source

1
Diamond formation using Fe3C as a carbon
source at high temperature and high pressure

Introduction
  • High-pressure synthesis using graphite as a
carbon source in the presence of a metallic
  • catalyst has been a standard method to obtain
    industrial diamond.
  • Recently, diamond formation has been reported
    using non-metallic solvent catalyst
  • such as CaCO3, Na2CO3 and graphite-Na2SO4.
  • In this paper, a diamond synthesis experiment
was carried out using only carbide as a
  • carbon source at HPHT.

3
Experimental procedure
Fe3C with high purity was prepared under the
conditions of 3GPa and 1573? for about 22min in
the iron-graphite system.
Before the diamond synthesis experiment at HPHT,
the iron carbides were milled until they were
about 80-100meshes.
The iron carbides were put in a reaction
container.
A temperature of 1610K and a pressure of 5.3GPa

Conclusion
  • Diamond crystals were formed from iron carbide
    at HPHT.
  • This work opens a new way to synthesize diamond
    at HPHT
  • and provide direct evidence concerning diamond
    formation
  • mechanism in the presence of transition metal
    catalyst using
  • graphite as a carbon source at HPHT.
