2What is the Kurzweil 3000?
- The Kurzweil 3000 is a comprehensive reading,
writing, and learning software solution for
students who struggle with reading - Students who may benefit from this software
- Individuals with Learning/Reading Disabilities
- Individuals with dyslexia
- Individuals with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity
Disorder - English Language Learners

3What can the Kurzweil do for students?
- Access
- Printed, electronic, and/or web-based materials
- Reading Fluency
- Helps students improve reading speed and
comprehension - Allows them to learn and study independently
- Study Skills
- Students can keep up on assigned reading, learn
study skills, and complete writing projects and
tests - Decoding Support
- Words are read aloud to the student in clear,
humanlike, synthetic speech, while highlighting
words being read - Writing/Self-editing tools
- As students type, the software speaks each letter
or word - The Check Spelling As You Type feature marks
errors in red - Independent Test-Taking
- Students can complete tests and worksheets with
the help of the reading features and ability to
type directly on the document itself
4How to use the Kurzweil 3000
- Look at computer screen. You should see
- Kurzweil 3000 icon
- A folder titled Kurzweil 3000 Pending Audio
- A folder titled Kurzweil 3000 Output Audio
- To open the Kurzweil 3000,
double click Kurzweil icon - Enter username
5How to Scan materials
- Materials must be scanned into the Kurzweil
before they can be read (unless they can be
opened in the Kurzweil, such as a PDF or Word
Document file) - Place the document to be scanned face down on the
scanner OR face-up in the feeder if there are
several, loose pages - Click the Scan icon on the toolbar near the top
of the Kurzweil window -

- After clicking the scan button, the scanner may
take several minutes to warm up - Once it scans the material, it will turn it
right-side-up if it had been upside-down - However, if extremely crooked, material should be
scanned again, because the Kurzweil will not be
able to read it - If you must rescan a document (crooked, words cut
off, etc), click the word scan at the top and
then click Rescan
7How to Save Materials
- Once youve scanned the material(s), you may want
to save it - Click the File button on the top left of the
toolbar, then click Save as - Be sure to save the file in a name that you may
recognize (ex. Falender-Supervision Ch 1-2) - Its best to save large documents in increments,
such as chapters (this will be helpful when you
create an audio file)

- Once the document is either opened or scanned
into the Kurzweil window, the printed material
can be read aloud - To have the Kurzweil Read
- Click the Green play button
- Then, adjust the reading speed/Words Per Minute
(WPM) by clicking up to increase or down to
decrease (or typing it in)

- Selecting an easy-to-listen-to voice is a helpful
feature - To select a voice
- Click on Tools
- In the drop down menu, select options
- The options box will then appear

- Select the Reading tab and you will find a drop
down menu of different voices. - Most prefer
- VWPaul or VWKate
- Most prefer
- a WPM speed
- of 110-140
11Audio Files
- An audio file is a MP3 or WAV file that can be
saved on a CD, MP3 player, Jump-drive, or UDrive - Audio files can then be opened on other computers
to be listened to - Commuters who have a converter for their MP3
player can listen to the audio file while driving - Students can listen to the audio file on their
MP3 player while walking to class, working out,
or while following along in their text

- Once material has been scanned, saved, and
preferences have been chosen, the audio file can
be created - To create an Audio File
- Click on File on the top toolbar
- A drop down menu will appear

- From Audio Files, click on Create Audio File

- A Create Audio File Window will appear
- You may select
- the entire
- document,
- a page range,
- or selected text
- to be converted

- If you havent already selected Voice and Speed
preferences, you may do this here

- Next, select whether you want an MP3 (takes up
less space) or a WAV file - Also, the quality of the sound (Good, Better, or
Best)

- Make sure the File Name is the file you want to
convert - Then click OK

- Once you click OK all pages to be converted
will be queued - You may open another document to convert and go
through the same process, but it is best not to
send more than two documents to be converted at a
time - Now, you must check the status of your Audio File

- Go to File, Audio Files, and click Audio

- An Audio Spooler Monitor window will appear
- The Current Job will be
- in the top box, which
- means its being converted
- Any jobs waiting to be
- converted will appear in
- the Pending Jobs box
- Once an Audio File is
- converted it will be in
- the Completed Jobs box
- To check the status of a
- current job, press Refresh
22Finding the Converted Audio File
- Once the jobs have been completed, they will
appear in a folder named Kurzweil 3000 Output
Audio on the desktop of the computer - Minimize the Kurzweil window
- Open the Kurzweil 3000 Output Audio
- You may check if the file plays by double
clicking the file you created
23To Save an Audio File on a Device
- Open your jump-drive, CD, UDrive Folder, or MP3
player with the Kurzweil 3000 Output Audio
folder still open - Then, drag your Audio File from the Kurzweil
3000 Output Audio folder to the jump-drive, CD,
UDrive folder, or MP3 player - The file should now be saved in your device
