CMCA
  • a community-organizing model program designed to
reduce teens (13-20 years of age) access to
alcohol by changing community policies and
    practices.

3
Goal in Oakland County
  • Mobilize community members to seek and achieve
changes in local public policies and practices
that affect youth access to alcohol.

4
Through Community Organizing
  • Assess legal, community, social and health issues
    related to underage drinking
  • Limit alcohol sales to minors
  • Obstruct the provision of alcohol to youth
  • Reduce alcohol use by teens.

5
Evidence Based Program
  • Established research has shown that the practices
    of CMCA will
  • Decrease sales of alcohol to 13-20 year old youth
    in bars and restaurants.
  • Decrease the number of youth who are provided
    alcohol by other youth.
  • Reduce DUI arrests of 18-20 year old youth.

6
Collaboration in CMCA
  • To communicate a clear community standard that
    underage drinking is inappropriate and
    unacceptable.

7
Communitiy organizing will
  • Activate a diverse citizenry from throughout
Oakland County to achieve institutional and
    policy change.

8
Based on research in other communities using
CMCA processes,
  • 18-20 year old youth in Oakland County will
    become
  • Less likely to try to purchase alcohol,
  • Less likely to go to bars to drink,
  • Less likely to drink alcohol,
  • Less likely to provide alcohol to underage youth.
