Dalton, John (1766-1844)

• Dalton, John ( Sept. 6 1766-July 27 1844),
  British chemist and physicist who developed the
  atomic theory of matter and hence is known as one
  of the fathers of modern physical science. He
  proposed the Atomic Theory in 1803 which stated
  that
• (1) all matter was composed of small
• indivisible particles termed atoms
• (2) atoms of a given element possess
• unique characteristics and weight
• (3) three types of atoms exist simple
• (elements), compound (simple
• molecules), and complex (complex
• molecules).
