The strategy of spatial education in the context
of the education for sustainable development
the R.A.V.E. Space project and related
activities. Strategija izobraevanja o prostoru
v kontekstu izobraevanja za trajnostni razvoj in
povezane dejavnosti.
2Facts and circumstances
- Professionals in spatial planning are not
understood by the general public - they need
allies and cooperators. - People are not satisfied with the processes of
decision-making and as a result they often act
against them. - The tendency of teaching in schools is learning
outside classrooms, connecting different subjects
from syllabi, paying more attention to
individuals etc. - Sustainable development idea is becoming a
universal political goal. - UN DESD (Deacde of Education for Sustainable
Development) future depends on knowledge we
share the education!!
3R.A.V.E. Space - Spatial education in primary
and secondary schools
Basic actions Analysis of syllabi Preparation
of educational strategy Production of
inventive teaching tools and short
educational films
4Defining the educational strategy
- Strategy is a set of ongoing activities that can
be supported on different levels of society and
are recognised as useful in practice. - Support means long term and effective stimulation
gained by acces to information, concrete advice
service and enlistment of financial stimulation. - The strategy combines formal, non-formal and
informal ways of education into a set of actions
that is open to improvements and further
development if needed.
5Starting points of the educational strategy
- We related values of space with spatial planning
and sustainable development. - We linked spatial education with education for
sustainable development (ESD - DESD) We must
change the habits and everyday practice on all
levels of society and on all fields of acting. - To take an active role in decision making and
development we all need more complex and linked
knowledge than the general situation today! - We must equip both youth and adults!
6General goals and aims
- To influence the general level of understanding
the spatial dimensions of our life, spatial
planning itself and individuals possibilities
to influence the outcomes. - To rise the general public awareness of values of
space / nature, wilderness, order, accessibility,
beauty, function, safety, heritage, health,
design etc. - To help develop an individuals ability of
critical thinking, organisation and
interpretation of data, forming questions,
analysing important issues etc. - To help people experience participation.
7Clue findings from case studies and project
research
- A reliable infrastructure to perform in practice
is needed. - Define informational, advisory and finacial
support! - A combination of two sided approach is
recommended - upside down - governmental responsibility
/minimum requested - bottom up - schools initiatives / potential
fulfilled - Respect schools - include their existing
progammes. - No new curriculum or syllabus / reorienting the
existing education. - New principles, skills, perspectives and values.
- Appropriateness and relevance are most valualble,
not the quantity!
8Guidelines for the educational concept
- Apply results according to societys
characteristics! - Define realistic goals and time limited actions!
- Provide support for minimal performance!
- Support bottom up initiatives!
- Involve programmes already in action!
- Involve parents!
- Report and evaluate!
- Personal experience is important!
- Every child counts!
9Existing problems in landscape and physical space
planning
- The responses to our research is often very poor
in everyday practice. - The professionals and the general public often
dont share the same values. - Spatial development depends on individual users,
their everyday use and commonly shared values. - We need allies and collaborators!
- As Prof. Maruic yesterday said It is our task
to enable everybody to take part in decision
making process that concern our landscapes.
10The answer lies in the knowledge we all lack
- Professionals should pay more attention to the
everyday practice and functional issues that
influence landscape and spatial values in each
society. - Professionals have to begin to understand that
that their knowledge is just one part of an
answer to the future spatial development and
accept the fact that they would perform better in
participation with users. - The public should be better equipped for the
participation as well. - The educational strategy should reach people of
different age and social status with formal and
non-formal methods.
11So how is landscape planning expected to benefit?
- More people will understand the processes behind
the landscapes they live in. - More people will be able to make everyday
decisions and act with the values of space in
mind. - Active participants that will share values and
knowledge with the professionals. - Every day user that is aware of the values of
space and the processes that change them. - A society that is able to discuss, cooperate and
be involved in the processes of spatial planning,
which eventually takes more responsibility in
every day decision making.
