Title: DAPHNE 11 To prevent and combat violence against children, young people, women and to protect victim
1DAPHNE 11To prevent and combat violence against
children, young people, women and to protect
victims and groups at risk
2Public Health Model
- Prevention raising of awareness in secondary
schools about healthy respectful relationships - Education introduction of materials on DV into
core training for key professionals working with
children and families - Promotion development of materials on DV for key
professionals to utilise when working with
children and families
3The Hampton Trust
- Charity established in 1996
- Our key area of specialist delivery is violence
and abuse services for perpetrators, victims, and
survivors
- The Hampton Trust works in partnership with
statutory and voluntary organisations to support
families, children and individuals who are
vulnerable and/or socially excluded
4What else we are doing
- Parenting programmes
- Work with young people exhibiting violent/abusive
behaviour - Perpetrators programmes
- Personal safety
- Bullying
- Training on working with challenging groups
- Educational and social outcomes programmes for
youth
5Legislative context of our work
- Domestic Violence Crime and Victims Bill (2004)
which strengthens the rights of victims and
witnesses (www.parliament.uk) - The DVCV Bill builds on the existing Criminal
Justice Act and amends the Harassment Act 1997
6Domestic Violence Crime and Victims Bill (2004)
- Police powers to deal with DV included making a
breach of a non molestation order a criminal
offence (5 years prison) - Common assault as an arrestable offence
- Stronger legal protection for victims by
extending use of restraining orders - Provided a code of practice that bound all
criminal justice agencies to ensure victims
receive support, protection and information - Victims can take their case to the Parliamentary
Ombudsman - Independent Commission for victims
- Co-habiting same sex couples have same protection
as heterosexuals - Extension of non molestation orders to couples
who have not been married - New offence of familial homicide
7Work thus far (1)
- Prevention secondary schools
- NB
- There are 46 secondary schools across Hampshire
and all 46 schools have been approached to
participate 4 schools responded so far 1
school has made a firm commitment
- Educational package has been researched, designed
and piloted in one school - Target age range 13 years plus
- Programme involves 8 x 90 minute sessions
- Programme focuses on healthy and respectful
relationships - Changes to programme from lesson learned in pilot
now need to be incorporated - Validated and reliable attitudinal measurement
scale obtained - Research into similar work suggests attitudinal
shift will be more significant in females than
males
8Work thus far (2)
- Education training for professionals
- Training package for professionals is designed
- There are nine SRE forums across Hampshire 8
have now participated in workshops - Eight Youth Offending Teams across Hampshire 8
have participated in a workshop - One school is scheduled for a whole school
approach to DV awareness training
9Work thus far (3)
- Training materials for professionals to deliver
DV sessions in schools and other youth venues has
been researched, designed and developed.
- Promotion materials on DV for professionals
10Lesson Learned (1) School Pilot
- Smaller groups required
- Same sex groups required as females inhibited in
mixed group - Programme design has too many sessions to fit
into the curriculum (X8)
11Lessons Learned (2) Schools Pilot
- Schools require 90 mins maximum (one session)
- Schools want DV built into overall curriculum
under key stages
12Lessons Learned (3) - Schools Pilot
- Main concern is Pandoras box
- Schools want links to bullying especially sexual
side of bullying
13Lesson Learned Training for Professionals
- Professionals do not feel skilled to deliver
- Schools can not spare time for whole school
training approach to skill up - Professionals do not want cascade training they
want someone who will deliver
- Some professionals concerned about child
protection issues - Teachers and youth workers may not have basic
knowledge of DV whilst health professionals may
be more skilled
14Lessons Learned Materials for Professionals
- Linked to lessons learned in training
- Capacity issues for professionals in taking on
what they see as additional work - Workers feel unable to ask about DV on an
individual basis
- Workers were asked to help writing materials, but
no take up - Workers want professionals to provide 11
sessions with young people - No supervision of workers who would be involved
15Lessons Learned monitoring tool
- Too big
- No time to complete if only a one off session
- Have to read it out due to literacy levels both
before and after the session - Collective answers and not personal
- Detract from educational time
16What now
- Incorporate lessons learned into programme
delivery - Look at an overall model of delivery rather than
a stand alone educational programme - Potential to take programme materials and link
into key stages (extensive work) - Potential to have programme materials available
on website for download - Need to address real concerns of Pandoras Box
17Lessons Learned - from young people
- About prejudice and how we need to respect others
- There are a lot more things considered as DV,
more than I thought there were - That DV is not just physical pushing or shoving,
it is about having power over people
manipulation about emotions bought on by DV - That it effects young people and that they may
not feel secure in talking about it - If someone was living with DV then I would listen
to them and let them know they are not alone and
that help is available - That we make assumptions without finding out
- That little things can hurt people in big ways
