Title: Oppositional Defiant Disorder ODD

1
Oppositional Defiant Disorder(ODD)
  • Justin Incudine

2
What is ODD?
  • Definition-
  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder is described as a
pattern of negativistic, hostile, and defiant
behavior lasting for at least six months.

3
What Causes it?
  • No one knows for certain. The usual pattern is
for problems to begin between ages 1-3. If you
think about it, a lot of these behaviors are
normal at age 2, but in this disorder they never
go away. It does run in families. If a parent is
alcoholic and has been in trouble with the law,
their children are almost three times as likely
to have ODD. That is, 18 of children will have
ODD if the parents are alcoholic and the father
has been in trouble with the law.

4
Diagnosis
  • In order to receive a diagnosis, at least 4 of
    these behaviors must be present.
  • Loses temper
  • Argues with adults
  • Actively defies or refuses to comply with adult
    requests or rules
  • Deliberately annoys others
  • Blames others for own mistakes or misbehavior
  • Is touchy or easily annoyed
  • Is angry and resentful
  • Is spiteful or vindictive

5
Conduct Disorder
  • Definition-
  • The essential feature of the diagnosis of (CD) is
a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior
that violates the basic rights of others as well
as the major age-appropriate societal norms.
  • The diagnosis for CD requires that three (3) or
more behaviors be present during the past twelve
months (12), with at least one(1) present in the
    past six(6) months.

6
ODD vs. Conduct Disorder

What happens to children who have ODD when they
grow up?
  • 1. Those who are lucky will outgrow the disorder.
The exact number is unclear, but probably not the
    majority.
  • 2. ODD may turn into conduct disorder, usually
within 3-4 years of ODD diagnosis.
  • 3. The individual will continue to have ODD. This
is the most common path. Some may also develop
    anxiety or mood disorders.
