2The Solar System
Our solar system consists of an average star we
call the Sun, the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth,
Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and
Pluto.
3Sun
The Sun is by far the largest object in the solar
system. It contains more than 99.8 of the total
mass of the Solar System (Jupiter contains most
of the rest).
4Mercury
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the
eighth largest. Mercury is smaller in diameter
than Ganymede and Titan but more massive.
5Venus
Venus is the second planet from the Sun and the
sixth largest. Venus' orbit is the most nearly
circular of that of any planet, with an
eccentricity of less than 1.
6Earth
Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the
fifth largest
7The Moon
The Moon, of course, has been known since
prehistoric times. It is the second brightest
object in the sky after the Sun. As the Moon
orbits around the Earth once per month, the angle
between the Earth, the Moon and the Sun changes
we see this as the cycle of the Moon's phases.
The time between successive new moons is 29.5
days (709 hours), slightly different from the
Moon's orbital period (measured against the
stars) since the Earth moves a significant
distance in its orbit around the Sun in that
time.
8Mars
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is
commonly referred to as the Red Planet. The
rocks, soil and sky have a red or pink hue. The
distinct red color was observed by stargazers
throughout history. It was given its name by the
Romans in honor of their god of war. Other
civilizations have had similar names. The ancient
Egyptians named the planet Her Descher meaning
the red one.
9Jupiter
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and by
far the largest. Jupiter is more than twice as
massive as all the other planets combined (318
times Earth).
10Saturn
Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the
second largest
11Uranus
Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun and the
third largest (by diameter). Uranus is larger in
diameter but smaller in mass than Neptune.
12Neptune
Neptune is the eighth planet from the Sun and the
fourth largest (by diameter). Neptune is smaller
in diameter but larger in mass than Uranus.
13Pluto
Pluto is the farthest planet from the Sun
(usually) and by far the smallest. Pluto is
smaller than seven of the solar system's moons
(the Moon, Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, Titan
and Triton).
