Title: Next Generation Networks NGMM Expert Group

1
Next Generation NetworksNGMM Expert Group
  • Peter Darling
  • ASTAP, August 2003

2
Introduction
  • The meeting was held in conjunction with the RLG
Expert Group on the morning of Wednesday 6 August
    2003
  • The meeting was Chaired by Peter Darling, ACIF,
    Australia
  • The meeting noted the major international
activity associated with NGN, and the forthcoming
    NGN Workshop

3
International Activity
  • The meeting looked at two recent major meetings
    on NGN
  • The Global Standards Collaboration Group (GSC)
had met in April, 2003 in Ottawa Canada, with
    input from standards development organisations
    including (from our region)
  • ACIF, ARIB, TTA, TTC
  • The meeting used the GSC 8 Resolution on NGN as a
guide to current work on NGN

4
ITU-T NGN Work
  • The ITU-T held an NGN Workshop in July 2003,
followed by a meeting of the NGN-2004 Project
    Group
  • We reviewed the outcome summary of the ITU-T
Workshop, and noted that many of the issues would
be discussed further at the APT NGN Workshop
    following ASTAP.
  • We agreed the importance of network work (by the
ITU-T) and protocol work (by the IETF), based on
agreed requirements developed in the ITU-T

5
Areas of Work
  • Major standardisation work is needed to develop
    end-to-end, interoperable next generation
    networks
  • Work is needed for arrangements to support
services across future networks, and between NGNs
and existing networks. These would have to cover
  • Current services (e.g. telephony, web surfing)
  • Future services

6
  • NGN deployment is currently occurring (and has
    already occurred)
  • There are many longer-term plans for NGN
    implementation
  • This region is leading the push for NGN
  • To support broadband roll-out
  • To extend existing networks
  • For the development of new networks
  • in both developed and developing economies.

7
  • The meeting agreed the importance of the
transition from current network to next
    generation networks.
  • The meeting agreed that much further work was
needed on the requirements for the transition
from current to next generation networks
    (including regulatory requirements).
  • Countries in our region are taking a leading role
in the development of next generation networks
and services, and ASTAP could play an important
role in defining these requirements and providing
them as input to the international
    standardisation process
