• CF is a Genetic disorder

Symptoms of cystic fibrosis and Detection

• Coughing or wheezing
• Respiratory illnesses
• Weight loss
• Salty-tasting skin
• Greasy stools

Detection

• Cystic Fibrosis can be detected by
• chest x-rays
• Blood test to evaluate nutritional status
• Performing genetic tests during pregnancy so
  parents could know if their unborn child has CF

Diagnostic Testing for CF

• Sweat test to measure the amount of salt in a
  persons sweat. It is collected from a persons arm
  or leg.
• In newborns, doctors measure the amount of
  protein called trypsinogen in the blood.
• Genetic tests can detect a defective CFTR gene
  using the persons blood.

Prognosis of CF

• Most people that are diagnosed with CF only live
  to about 30, because lung cells dont last as
  long as they should.
• There is no cure for CF, but new treatment
  helping people live longer.

Treatment

• What are the treatments for CF
• Chest physical therapy were people with the
  disease are clapped on the back many times to
  release mucus in the chest.
• Patients inhale antibiotic to kill the bacteria
  that cause lung infections
• Bronchodilators help open the patients airway

Current Research for CF

• One of the newest treatment for CF that is still
  being researched is an inhaled spray containing
  normal copies of the CF gene.

Genetic Counseling

• A genetic counselor would usually tell the
  parents (a carrier of CF) that there children
  have a
• 50 chance of being a carrier
• 25 chance of having the disease, and a 25
  chance of not being affected if both parents are
  carriers.

• About 2,500 babies are born with CF in America
  every year.
• More than 10 million American carry the CF but
  dont know it
