8Plans to be Made
Odysseus will go into Ithaca as a
beggar. Telemachus is to return to his mother,
tell her nothing of Odysseus return, and
convince his mother to make a test for the
suitors. Eumaeus is to get two of the other
servants to come to the palace. Their job is to
wait for an opportunity to steal the weapons of
the suitors. Also, unknown to Odysseus, Athena
goes to Zeus to ask for a special favor.

faithful maid Eurycleia was once Odysseus
nanny.As she washes the feet of the beggar,
Eurycleia recognizes a scar one she saw years
ago on the foot of her young charge after he cut
his foot on a sharp stone.Odysseus has to grab
Eurycleia by the throat to stop her from shouting
his name.
14Penelope meets with the beggar. He tells her of
meeting Odysseus and of his coming
home. Penelope believes the beggars tale and
decides to follow Telemachus advice about
challenging the suitors with a test. The winner
of the challenge will be her new husbandher hope
is that the challenge is so difficult that none
will pass and all will have to leave in shame.

- She has one more test for Odysseus.
- She asks Eurycleia to put the Master bed out in
the hall for the visitor. - Odysseus explodes in anger. He knows that the
bed cannot be moved he built it.

20Odysseus Father
Laertes refuses to forgive his son for leaving
the family for the war. He blames his son for
the death of Odysseus motherlittle realizing
just how right he is about the death of his
wife. However, Laertes does help Odysseus in the
fight against the families of the
suitors. Athena finally ends the fighting by
threatening to destroy all of Greece if the
conflict did not end.
