A state of the art recycling plant that produces
a pulp comparable to virgin pulps
RCF Plant
Uses 180kt of recovered paper per year,
predominantly from London
Produces 105kt of high quality fibre
ISO14001, ISO 9001 EMAS
17
UK Consumption of Paper Board 12.9 million
tonnes Only about 10 of the UK is
forested Many papermaking sectors rely on
recovered paper as their fibre source Little
recovered paper is used in graphic papers
18
Typical Myths About Recycled Paper
  • Recycled paper is grey and not smooth so
    unsuitable for office use
  • Recycled paper jams more in office photocopiers
    printers

19
M-real Recovered Fibre Plant
  • In 1993 UK Paper (now M-real) decided to build a
    recycled fibre plant to
  • Reduce dependence on imported virgin fibre.
  • Enable the production of niche products.
  • Plant was commissioned in December 1995 at a
    total investment cost of 43M.
  • The plant converts 180,000Tpa of mixed office
waste from the London area to a high quality
    pulp.
  • The pulp is mostly used in M-real New Thames Mill
in the production of a range of office papers
including two recycled grades, EVOLVE Office and
    EVOLVE Business.

RCF Plant Optimisation
  • Plant designed from pilot plant trials
  • Equipment requirements and efficiency determined
from raw material characteristics (Mixed Office
Waste) and end product (Office and offset
    graphics papers) requirements
  • Dirt In 3000 PPM, Out lt10 PPM
  • Removal efficiency 99.7
  • Brightness In 55 Uvex, Out gt 86 Uvex.

ISO14001, ISO 9001 EMAS
21
UK - Leading the world
  • New Thames Mill consumes over 180,000 tonnes of
recovered paper per year from London South
    East.
  • This is manufactured into tonnes 105,000 of high
    quality recycled pulp.
  • This is the equivalent of 16 of UKs office
    waste paper.

22
Investing in the Environment
  • M-real has invested over 118 million in
state-of-the-art technology at New Thames Mill
    since 1993
  • Recycled Fibre Plant
  • Combined Heat Power Plant
  • Waste Water Treatment Plant
  • Sludge Combustion Plant
  • The Result
  • A production process that minimises the impact on
    the environment at every stage
