School Year?
- In accordance with the 2006-2007 selection
policy, the LMC focused on acquiring print and
non-print science materials that support the K-5

3Why did we choose to focus on Science?
- There are multiple reasons for selecting science
as our area for collection development
- Curriculum support
- -Collaboration with teachers revealed that
current science materials do not support or align
with the science units taught in the classroom.
- -In accordance with the our Media Center
Philosophy, we chose to augment the science
portion of the collection to support the
curricular goals and units and to provide optimum
learning opportunities for the students. (Link
 to Philosophy)
- Outdated materials
- -Teachers and students complained that existing
science materials are outdated and provided
 incorrect information.
- -Currency in science is a critical factor in
information accuracy due to new advancements and
 recent discoveries.
- Collection evaluation
- -A careful evaluation of the collection by the
LMS revealed that many gaps existed in the
 science collection.
- -LMS examined the state of Georgia QCCs to
identify and prioritize which areas of the
 science collection to augment.
4Why did we choose to focus on Science? contd
- Desire to make a big impact in a short time frame
- -Concentrating LMC funds on building a specific
area of the collection such as the science
collection allows us to bring this area in line
with the school curriculum goals and state
 standards in an expedited manner.
- -Focusing on one specific area provides us with
an opportunity to benefit students across all
 grade levels.
- Promote life-long love of learning
- -In accordance with AASL standards, our focus on
science provides us with an opportunity to
generate student interest in the sciences by
offering a wide variety of reference,
 non-fiction, fiction and electronic resources.
These items were selected to encourage curiosity,
support classroom lessons, and spark critical
thinking. (Promote Life-long love of Learning)
- Promote literacy
- -In accordance with AASL standards, our focus on
science materials also offers an opportunity to
promote literacy. We will ensure this standard
is met actively promoting all of our new
acquisitions to all members of the learning
 community.
5How did we decide what to order?
- Our Consideration Process for the 2006 Order
 Included
- Teacher requests
- -LMS gathered resource requests from teachers,
evaluated the requests and prioritized the
requests in the order process based on merit and
 value added to the collection.
- Reviews
- -LMS carefully examined professional reviews for
all materials placed in the order.
- Students
- -LMS gathered suggestions for resources from
students, evaluated the requests and prioritized
the requests in the order process based on merit
and value added to the collection.
6Additional factors influencing the order process.
- QCCs
- -QCCs for grade levels K-5 were consulted to
assist in appropriately filling gaps in the
 collection
- Accommodating Learning styles
- -LMS ordered print and non-print materials to
accommodate the different learning styles of
students, aural, visual, etc. (Access to
 Information)
- Genre
- -LMS ordered a variety of genres that focused on,
related to, or incorporated science themes and
 concepts.
- -Genres include fiction, non-fiction, DVDs, VHS
 tapes and reference materials.
7Choosing a Vendor
This year we chose to place our entire order
through Follett because
- Follett is integrated with our automation
software allowing for efficient and easy
processing of the items into the collection
- Follett offered a wide range of materials that
matched our selection criteria for supporting the
 curriculum, quality, price, overall value,
 durability, currency, etc.
- Follett offered materials that addressed the
needs of all grade levels and materials in a
 number of genres and formats
- Follett provided an online order tool that
allowed us to categorize, sort and prioritize
items. This tool helped us ensure that we
obtained the maximum number of resources within
 the limits of our budget.
8Placing the Order
- Order was placed using Folletts online ordering
 tool TITLEWAVE
- Order was placed in accordance to all City of
 Commerce School Systems purchasing guidelines
- When placing the order the LMS strictly adhered
to the approved budget of 2,000.
-
- The LMS built in an industry standard overage of
25 to ensure all available dollars were spent
- The LMS also included the insertion of a do not
exceed notation to prevent over spending the
 allotted 2,000 budget
9Wheres the fiction?
- It is true that science is our selection and
acquisition focus this year, but we havent
neglected fiction. In this case we have taken
the following measures to foster literacy and
 promote leisure reading
- Included in our order a number of fiction titles
spanning reading levels from picture books to
 chapter books that incorporate scientific
 concepts or themes.
- The fiction books selected will also encourage
discovery and overall interest in science.
- These fiction books will be promoted and
celebrated along with the non-fiction, reference
 and non-print materials.
- LMS will incorporate appropriate fiction titles
acquired through this order in story times and
group book talks. (Promote Life-long Learning)
- LMS will also draw titles from this acquisition
when selecting the LMS Favorite Read of the
Week in which the LMS reads the books and then
shares her excitement about the title with
individual patrons and recommends they read it
too. (Model Personal Enjoyment, Promote Leisure
 Reading)
10What about non-print resources?
- The LMS ordered a variety of DVDs, VHS tapes, and
CD ROM read-along recordings that correlate
directly to the QCCs for science in each grade
 level.
- These resources were purchased to offer
informative material to support aural and visual
 learning.
- Ordered as many of these materials as possible in
DVD format, based on durability and storage
 considerations
- All DVDs and VHS tapes were purchased with
performance rights to ensure maximum and legal
usage of the materials (Complies with ethical
 legal practices)
