3Accident Response
- Phases of Response
- Immediate
- Get Control
- Administrative
- Clean-up
4Immediate Response
- Send people to the scene
- (Blankets, First-Aid kit, Fire Extinguisher, Tool
box) - Notify Fire, Police, EMS, Rescue (911)
- (Know your official address phone number)
- Establish a temporary Command Post
5 Get Control Response
- Send a person to the main access road to direct
traffic. - Assign a person to be spokesperson emergency
services contact. - Assign a person to collect information.
- (Time, Weather, Names of Witnesses, Photos)
- Assign a person to contact family.
- (Coordinate with Law Enforcement)
6 Get Control Response
- While all this is going on remember
- Dont Be A Hero!
- (Let professionals do what they know how to do!)
- Is the aircraft a Military or Ag Aircraft?
- (Explosives or Chemicals on board.)
- Life Guard will respond if requested by EMS.
- Weather conditions can change rapidly
- (Time, Weather, Names of Witnesses, Photos)
7 Administrative Response
- These people cant help you right now, but you
have to notify them - NTSB
- FAA
- City/County Officials
- Know the aircraft make/model N-number date,
time, location of the accident number of
persons aboard their injuries nature of the
accident and local weather conditions. - (This is a good statement to give to the Press
when they arrive.)

9 Look at the camera Speak slower!
- The PRESS can be overwhelming!
- Someone will have to do this
- Designate a spokesperson (NTSB, FAA, Mayor)
- If YOU ARE NOT the spokesperson SHUT UP!
- Off the Record IS NEVER Off the Record!
- Use a prepared written statement
10 Tell Us What Happened!
- DO NOT give out the names of people involved.
- DO NOT assign a cause to the accident.
- DO NOT speculate as to the cause of the accident.

11 Clean-Up Response
- Do not move the Aircraft!
- (Except to rescue persons or protect the public
from injury. - The NTSB or FAA must release it from the
investigation.) - If you can not move the aircraft, cover it and
secure the scene w/local law enforcement
officers. - Obtain someone to remove the aircraft to a
hangar.
12FAR 139.325
- requires a holder of an Airport Certificate to
develop and maintain an airport emergency plan - procedures for prompt response
- a communications network.
- sufficient detail to provide adequate guidance
to each person.

- Do YOU know the capabilities of
- Local hospitals or medical facilities
- Rescue squads and ambulance companies
- Fire fighting equipment
- Life Guard helicopters
- Do you have their phone numbers on file?
14Have you Considered
- Writing/drafting an accident response plan
- Building an accident kit
- Creating a file w/names phone numbers
- Having a tabletop accident response drill
- Having an actual accident response drill
15Remember This!
- When Captain Al Haynes got United 232 on the
ground at Sioux City his ordeal was over. - The Sioux City Airport Managers ordeal had just
started!
