Properties
  • Nonmetals are described by their physical and
    chemical properties.
  • Physical Properties dullness, brittle (break
    easily), poor conductors, low density, most are
    gases at room temperature low boiling point
  • Chemical Properties easily form compounds
    (except group 18) with metals, like NaCl, and
    other nonmetals, like O2, which is called a
    diatomic molecule, or another nonmetal, like CO2

Families of Nonmetals
  • Carbon group 14 ev4 C is the only nonmetal
  • Nitrogen group 15, ev5 N and P are the only
    nonmetals
  • Oxygen group 16 ev6 O, S and Se are the only
    nonmetals
  • Halogen group 17 ev7 very, very reactive
    very dangerous very helpful almost always found
    in a compound
  • Noble Gases group 18 ev8 do not form
    compounds very stable and unreactive
  • Hydrogen 1p ev1 0n usually found in
    compouds

Metalloids
  • Metalloids are found on either side of the zigzag
    or stairstep line, forming the border between
    metals and nonmetals.
  • Includes B, Si, Ge, As, Sb, Te, and At
  • Some are used as semiconductors. Semiconductors
    are elements that can conduct electricity under
    specific situations, like temperature, light
    exposure, or impurities.
