  • Population growth from 250,000 in 1700 to 2.5
    million by the mid 1770s.

    Swedish, etc.) also tolerance for religious and
    cultural differences

  • Rich soil, warm climate
  • A lot of farming, no need for industry or
    commerce
  • Cash Crops Tobacco and Rice
  • Relied on slave labor
  • Most plantations were located in the Tidewater
  • Included backcountry settlers toward the
    Appalachian Mountains

  • Most slaves lived on Plantations.
  • Some worked in the house
  • Most worked on the fields and were treated with
    cruelty
  • Overseers kept the slaves working hard
  • Many colonies issued slave codes
  • Many slaves kept African traditions
  • Many colonists disagreed with slavery
