- Eighty-five tornadoes ripped through the Plains
States on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 4-6,
touching down in Kansas, Oklahoma, and South
Dakota. - One of them, a half-mile-wide wedge-tornado
with winds of 205 miles/hour devastated the town
of Greensburg, Kansas on Friday night. -

- It destroyed 95 percent of Greensburg, a town of

- Only ten deaths! Thirty minutes of early warning
paid off. - The 1,500 residents of Greensburg are now
committed to the difficult task of rebuilding
homes, two schools, a hospital, commercial and
government buildings, infrastructure, and the
lives that were destroyed and changed by the
tornado. -
16SEARCH AND RESCUE
- In Greensburg, first responders searching for
survivors had to deal with rubble that was up to
20 30 feet deep. - Fortunately, the people had about 30 minutes of
warning before the tornado reached Greensburg and
were able to go to basements and safe rooms. - Although devastation was almost total, the death
toll was only 10..
