Project Goals
  • Long Term Goal To increase community
    participation in substance use prevention
    programming through implementing and sustaining
    evidence based programs in Barron County.
  • Short Term Goal To build Strengthening Families
    Program 10-14 (SFP 10-14) infrastructure in
    Barron County.

Evidence
  • In 2004 Barron County led the State of Wisconsin
    with 91 methamphetamine cases submitted to the
    State Crime lab. In 2005 Barron County ranked
    2nd out of 72 Counties in methamphetamine cases
    submitted to the State Crime Lab, coming in
    behind their neighboring county to the west, Polk
    County, by 2 cases.

Evidence
  • SFP 10-14 has proven effective in
  • Delaying the onset of adolescent substance use
    including tobacco, alcohol and marijuana
  • Reducing methamphetamine abuse in rural
    adolescents
  • Lowering levels of aggression
  • Increasing the resistance to peer pressure in
    youth
  • Increasing the ability of parents/caregivers to
    set appropriate limits and show affection to and
    support of their children

Objectives
  • Identify Barron County facilitators who are fully
    trained in SFP 10-14.
  • Designate one contact agency for all SFP 10-14
    resources in Barron County.

Activity Summary
  • Obtained list of those who completed the SFP
    10-14 training.
  • Created a facilitator information sheet with
    contact information and information such as do
    they need a stipend or will the facilitate as
    part of their job? Availability? Etc.
  • Contacted trained facilitators and completed the
    information sheet for each.
  • Looked at gaps in facilitators, working on
    scheduling a training.

Activities
  • Met 3 times with SSF Coalition work committee,
    identified a primary contact agency UW Extension
  • UW Extension has curriculum for SFP 10-14 for
    check out
  • Purchased updated curriculum/videos using SSF
    Coalition funds

Successes
  • Coalition was restructured starting 1/1/07 and
    appears to be working more efficiently.
  • Coalition has seen an increase in active members
    from averaging 11 members per meeting before HWLI
    to averaging 15 members now including
    participation from law enforcement, clergy,
    youth, parents.

    County
  • Implementing Class Action/Project Northland
    throughout Barron County
  • Creating a brochure promoting SSF, a speakers
    bureau listing and other marketing strategies

Challenges
  • Possessiveness of curriculum/ facilitators by an
    agency
  • One agency not offering SFP 10-14 as intended
  • Time
  • Recruitment of families

Words of Wisdom
  • Dont do METH or your teeth will rot (but we hear
    theres good care in LaCrosse)!
  • Dont do METH its not a good way to lose weight
    (but Portage Co CAN help)!
  • Dont do METH (but the LGBT youth group can get
    you hooked up with a good summer program)!
  • Dont do METH (but the FPW can help with Plan B
    the next morning, Milwaukee has a great sign up
    system in place)!
  • Dont do METH or we will report it to Micah on a
    ZOOMERANG Survey!

    (earlier is ok too!)
