Early Peoples
  • Settled about 3000 B.C. along the Nile River, in
    Egypt.
  • Ruled by pharaohs- considered to be gods and had
    complete power.
  • Egyptians built pyramids, developed hieroglyphs,
    and the 365- day calendar.
  • Later, the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans came in
    and captured various parts of North Africa.

Colonialism
  • The Ottoman Empire (Turkey) ruled until the
    1800s.
  • In the 1830s, French, Spaniards, and Italians
    settled the Maghreb region- Tunisia, Algeria, and
    Morocco.
  • Great Britain took over Egypt in 1882.
  • Italy took over Libya in 1912.

People Languages
  • Nearly all people are Arab or Arab-Berber.

Traditions Customs
  • Traditional clothing is long and loose.
  • Caftans and gallibiyas are pants with a long
    shirt-like garment.
  • Womens clothing follows Muslim tradition by
    covering all of the body except the face and
    hands.
