Early Years

• Haskins lab nutrition, physiology in algae,
  protozoans and invertebrates
• Developed artificial seawater media for the
  culture/growth of marine bugs

• Born in Italy (1908)
• Graduated from Milan with 17 publications
• WW II broke out, moved to New York
• Head of Dept at St. Francis College, worked with
  Euglena

• Moved to Yale Faculty Fellow
• Fully developed culture media for aquatic bugs
• Cultivated axenic culture of ulvacean greens
• Studied bacterial influence on algae morphogenesis

• Also worked with shrimp Artenia and water fly
  Moina
• Cultured the flatworm Convoluta (symbiotic with
  green algae)
• Founding editor of the Journal of Phycology
  (inaugurated 1965)

Later Years

• Retired in 1978, research efforts continued
• Cardiac surgery, retired to Italy with wife, Rose
  
• Passed away in 1992
