Title: Krebs Cycle and the Mitochondria

1
Krebs Cycle and the Mitochondria
2
  • The mitochondria is found in eukaryotic cells and
    not prokaryotes
  • The mitochondria has its own DNA (circular) and
proteins. The only other organelle is the
    chloroplast.
  • The mitochondria has three parts outer membrane,
    inner membrane and matrix
  • The outer membrane is permeable to pyruvate.

  • Pyruvate must be transported across the inner
    membrane of the mitochondria.
  • The enzyme complex pyruvate dehydrogenase
    converts pyruvate into acetyl-CoA.
  • Pyruvate dehydrogenase consists of multiple
copies of three enzymes pyruvate dehydrogenase,
    dihydrolipoyl transacetylase and dihydrolipoyl
    dehydrogenase.
  • Converting pyruvate to acetyl-CoA requires NAD
    to NADH

  • The Krebs cycle generates one ATP or GTP, one
FADH2 ,two carbon dioxides, three NADH all from
    one pyruvate.
  • Amino acids and fatty acids can be converted into
acetyl-CoA for entry into Krebs cycle
  • Alpha ketoglutarate can be converted into amino
    acids, heme, nucleic acids
  • Citrate can be converted into fatty acids
