What is FERPA?

• FERPA is the acronym for Family Educational
  Rights and Privacy Act (also called the Buckley
  Amendment)
• FERPA protects the rights of the student and
  allows the student special rights and
  considerations, such as
• Right to see their educational records
• Right to seek amendment to those records in
  certain cases
• Right to consent disclosure of his/her records
• Right to file a complaint with the FERPA Office

FERPA Continued

• Educational Records are defined as records that
  contain information that is directly related to
  the student and are maintained by the University.
  
• FERPA rights begin once the student enrolls in
  classes

Directory Information

• Directory information can
• and will be released without
• the permission of the
• student, for legitimate
• educational needs and the
• information includes
• Name
• Major field of study
• Attendance dates
• Most recent institution
• attended
• Address (home and local)

• phone number (home and local)
• email address
• height and weight (if on athletic team)
• date and place of birth
• Participation in officially
• recognized activities and
• events
• Degrees and awards received

Releasing information

• To provide consent for parents, guardians or
  spouse to have access to educational records,
  written notification must be received in the
  Office of Academic Records and is valid until
  withdrawal of the form is received in writing

Withholding Information

• If suppression of directory information is
  desired, annual written notice of suppression
  must be received in the Office of Academic
  Records. If suppression is chosen, all
  information will be suppressed, including
  President and Deans list honors, confirmation
  that you attended McKendree, information to
  scholarship committees and potential employers
  and all other information. In short, you will not
  exist as a McKendree student to anyone outside of
  McKendree.
