7th Chords
  • In order to properly label 7th chords, you must
    first find the lower 3 notes chord quality, then
    find the 7th quality by itself ie. Mm7
  • 1 Get the lower 3 notes chords quality using
    the CHORDS chart
  • 2 Determine the type of interval it is between
    the root and the 7th
  • 3 This table will help identify the 7ths
    quality
  • If the 7th in Major, then the chord is XM7
  • If the 7th is minor, then the chord is Xm7
  • If the 7th is diminished, then look at the chord
    quality
  • If it is minor then it is a X 7
    (half-diminished)
  • If it is diminished then it is a X ?7 (fully
    diminished)

7th Chord Inversions
  • If the note is the Root (do) it is in root
    position. It receives no special label.
  • If the note is the third (mi) it is in 1st
    inversion. Label it as X
  • If the note is the fifth (sol) it is in 2nd
    inversion. Label it as X
  • If the note is the seventh (ti) it is in the
    3rd inversion. Label it as X2
