1Biodiesel Used Cooking Oil Technology
Pursuing Green Growth in Asia and the Pacific
- Olivia la O Castillo, D.B.A. Chair/ President
- Asia Pacific Roundtable for Sustainable
Consumption and Production (APRSCP) - 05 April 2005 Solid Waste Management Forum
2Sustainable Consumption Production
Its effects on the Pursuit of Green Growth in the
Asia Pacific Region
3WHAT IS SCP?
- Sustainable Consumption means to consume more
efficiently and differently - Life Cycle thinking at the centre of attention
- Sustainable Consumption for improved quality of
life. - Sustainable Production is defined as the creation
of goods and services using processes and systems
that are non-polluting conserving of energy and
natural resources economically viable safe and
healthful for employees, communities,
and consumers and socially
and creatively rewarding for
all working people.(Source

4- Sustainable Consumption and Production
- IS an ISSUE
- Options for the future
- 1) We find 4 more planets to support the current
- consumption patterns for the whole world OR
- 2) We consume 4 to 10 times more efficiently!
-
- We are free to choose
OLIVIA CASTILLO, 2005
5Shift to SCP in the Asia Pacific Region
- despite significant achievements, it has become
increasingly evident that the environmental gains
achieved on the supply side by CP programmes are
being offset by consumer trends on the demand
side - It is therefore necessary to rethink how the
benefits gained through CP can be enhanced.
Moreover, it is clear that we need to work on the
demand side as well, looking at effective
mechanisms to re-orient consumption, shifting it
towards Sustainable Consumption. Not only that,
the "rebound effect' is a clear signal of the
need to work on the consumption patterns. - - Niclas Svenningsen, UNEP
OLIVIA CASTILLO, 2005
6- At the World Summit on Sustainable Development
(WSSD) in Johannesburg 2002 the links between
consumption and production were highlighted as a
key issue to address for Sustainable Development
(SD)
OLIVIA CASTILLO, 2005
7Challenge to undertake SCP
- SCP requires an effort to create a
strategic-level coordination mechanisms in which
issues and challenges related to both consumption
and production can be addressed in a more
holistic manner - Moving towards SCP is therefore not a question of
replacing CP or other related concepts, but
rather a matter of coordination in the
application of existing tools and concepts to
promote improvements in production- and
consumption efficiency
OLIVIA CASTILLO, 2005
8- They include a range of different methodologies,
tools, initiatives, training packages and
programmes such as - Life Cycle Analysis
- Cleaner Production
- Product-Service Systems
- Eco-design
- Sustainable Procurement
- UN Guidelines for Consumer Protection,
Advertising for Sustainable Consumption, and
Education and Awareness Raising activities.

9SCP Situation at the Present in the Asia Pacific
Region
- A. Cleaner / Sustainable Production
- - CP must be adopted by SMEs
- SMEs in Asia Pacific constitute more than
80 of companies - It represents the backbone of the present
industrial infrastructure in Asia-Pacific.. - - CP must address New Industrialisation
- It is estimated that by 2020, 70-80 of the
worlds industrial manufacturing will take place
within this region putting an additional pressure
on the environment and existing infrastructure.
OLIVIA CASTILLO, 2005
10SCP Situation at the Present in the Asia Pacific
Region
- B. Sustainable Consumption
- The most significant trend in the region is
perhaps the rapidly growing middle-income class
that is striving to adopt the affluent
consumption patterns of wealthier people

12What is Biodiesel?
Biodiesel, an ester made from biofuels or animal
oil, is clean, environmentally friendly, burns
completely and emits less pollutant than
diesel oil when used in diesel engines.
OLIVIA CASTILLO, 2005
13What is Biodiesel?
- Biodiesel refers to the fuel that comes in the
form of esters resulting from the chemical
reaction between biofuels or animal oil with
methanol or ethanol. This chemical reaction is
called transesterification
OLIVIA CASTILLO, 2005
14TRANSESTERIFICATION
Production of biodiesel through the reaction of
biofuels/animal oil with methanol or ethanol,
yielding methyl or ethyl ester or biodiesel
with glycerol as the by-product.
