Introduction
  • This is an introductory lesson for first time
    Chemistry students.
  • I am Celia Frederick, your course instructor.

3
Topic of Discussion
  • Todays focus is on defining Chemistry and
showing its relevance in every-day life.

4
What is Chemistry?
  • Chemistry is the study of the nature and
properties of all forms of matter (the substances
which make up our environment) and the changes
    they undergo as conditions (temperature,
pressure, etc.) change. It includes mans
attempts to transform the natural world in order
to benefit from natures complexities and hidden
    resources.

5
Application of Chemistry
  • Chemistry is used in many industries. For
    example
  • Food and Beverages
  • Medicine (diagnosis and treatment)
  • Cosmetics and Beauty Supplies
  • Agriculture (fertilizers and pesticides, etc.)
  • Archeology (carbon dating)
  • Textiles/Fabrics

6
Learning Chemistry
  • In addition to being guided by a knowledgeable
Instructor/Tutor, the following tools can assist
    in your understanding of Chemistry
  • Good text
  • CBT (simulation software)
  • Internet

7
