Living in a drug-oriented society
  • Have a headache? Take a painkiller.
  • Does your stomach hurt? Take an antacid.
  • Feeling tired? Drink some coffee.
  • Want to relax? Have a beer.
  • We are constantly being told how great drugs are
    (Caffeine, alcohol, pain killers, etc.).

Advertisements
  • TV commercials constantly tell us to take drugs
    to be happy, awake, pain free, to fall asleep,
    etc.
  • Every year pharmaceutical companies spend about
    25 billion on advertising. The Alcohol industry
    spends 18-20 billion.
  • Many sports events are sponsored by beer or other
    drug manufacturers.
  • Message If we take a drug, we will feel better.

Healthier Options NO DRUGS!
  • Name at least two ways to relieve a headache.
  • Name at least two ways to ease an upset stomach.
  • Name at least two ways to naturally relax.
  • Name at least two ways to naturally wake up/feel
    more energized.

What is a drug?
  • Drug any substance that causes a physical change
    in a person.
  • Natural Remedies contain substances that occur
    in nature and are used to treat or prevent
    ailments. Ex Peppermint.
  • Over-the-Counter Drugs OTCs can be legally
    bought without a doctors prescription. Ex Advil.

  • Prescription Drugs drugs that require a doctors
    prescription to buy. Includes the drugs name,
    directions for use, and dose. Usually more
    powerful than OTCs.
  • Tobacco Products contain the drug nicotine. Ex
    cigarettes, cigars, snuff, chew.

  • Alcohol beer, wine, and distilled liquors.
    Illegal for people under 21 years of age.
  • Illegal Drugs substances than cannot be legally
    sold, purchased, or used.
  • Unrecognized Drugs found in products that are
    not usually classified as drugs. Ex Caffeine,
    inhalants (paint, gasoline, glue).

  • Drug Use taking a medicine properly and in its
    correct dosage. (Ex taking a prescription, or
    swallowing an Advil.)
  • Drug Abuse intentional improper use of a drug.
    Ex using an illegal drug, or using cough
    medicine to get high.)
  • Drug Misuse improper use of a drug. Ex taking
    the wrong amount of a drug, or stopping use too
    soon.)

OTCs and Prescription Drugs
  • Medicine a substance used to treat an illness or
    ailment.
  • OTCs
  • Analgesics pain relievers (Ex aspirin,
    ibuprofen).
  • Sedatives slow down the body (Ex sleeping
    pills).
  • Stimulants make you more alert. (Ex caffeine).
