  • Establishment of International Business Machines
    Corporation can be traced to the close of the
    nineteenth century
  • US Census Bureau wanted a more efficient means of
    tabulating census data in order to measure the
    expanding population
  • Herman Hollerith -German immigrant and Census
    Bureau statistician invented the Punch Card
    Tabulating Machine which used an electric current
    to sense holes in punched cards
  • He formed the Tabulating Machine Company in 1896

    merged with Computing Scale Company of America
    and International Time Recording Company
  • Renamed Computing- Tabulating- Recording Company
  • (C-T-R).
  • C-T-R was incorporated in New York on June 16,
    1911, as a consolidation of the Computing Scale
    Co. of America, the Tabulating Machine Co., and
    The International Time Recording Co.
  • The name was changed to International Business
    Machines Corporation (IBM) in 1924.
  • Headquartered in New York City.
