Who came up with the pi symbol?
  • The modern symbol for pi ? was first used in
    1706 by William Jones.
  • Pi was chosen as the letter to represent the
number 3.141592... because the letter ? in
Greek, pronounced like our letter 'p', stands for
    'perimeter'.

3
Why is pi an irrational number?
  • One way to interpret the fact that pi is an
irrational number is to say that there is no
exact relationship between a circle's diameter
and circumference. You can estimate it as
accurately as you like, but you can never know it
    exactly.
  • Pi is an irrational number, which means that it
cannot be expressed as a fraction a/b, where a
and b are integer, and b does not equal zero. It
is a decimal representation that never ends or
    repeats.

How might the world be different if pi was never
discovered?
  • There would have to be a different formula for
finding area and circumference of a circle.
  • It might be impossible to figure out an accurate
formula so the circle as we know it may not exist
resulting in changes in the world such as
  • Square man hole covers instead of circles.
  • Tires on cars may not be even, which causes rough
    driving.
  • Storage containers may only come in rectangles
    and squares.
  • Circle earrings may not exist.
  • Hula hoops and yo-yos would not work properly.
  • The pulley would have never been invented, which
would change the way weight machines would work.
  • And the list goes on
  • What suggestions or ideas do you have???
