4STEPS
Once first tour is complete - SM can start using
MGIB benefits at a reduced rate
Bring in copy of DD 214 to School - complete VA
Form 22-1990 application for benefits
- School must be approved for Veterans Benefits.
- AD MGIB months of benefits is reduced if you used
SR MGIB
5MGIB Issues...
120 days
- Expect your first payment
- to arrive approximately 120 days after
- you applied for benefits.
- It is common for 1st time MGIB users to receive
a letter from the VA stating that they are not
eligible for MGIB benefits.

- Ask the counselor to determine why you are
ineligible for benefits. - If the counselor states that your record needs
to be updated, e-mail Education office at
Education_at_mn.ngb.army.mil
Keep your chain of command informed!
7Federal Tuition Assistance
- Pays up to 4,000 per fiscal year (no max on
credits) - Must submit a DA Form 2171, Request for Tuition
Assistance, prior to starting the course via
http//www.virtualarmory.com - Money is paid directly to the school.
- After coursework is complete, must submit a copy
of the grade. Soldier will be subject to
recoupment if grades are not submitted within 30
(waived to 60) days at end of course - FTA is paid on first come, first pay basis.
Priority goes to those seeking Associates or
Bachelors degrees, then Masters or first
professional.
Traditional Soldier Benefit
8ACES Tuition Assistance
- Pays up to 4,500 per fiscal year (no max on
credits) - Must submit a DA Form 2171, Request for Tuition
Assistance, prior to starting the course - Money is paid directly to the school
- Go through Fort Snelling Education Service Office
for AGR soldiers - Benefit for deployed soldiers - must contact
Active Army Education Office to receive this
benefit while activated.

10Minnesota Tuition Reimbursement Program
80
The Minnesota National Guard reimburses service
members 80 of their tuition cost, up to 80 of
the per credit rate at the University of
Minnesota. Current 183.45 max reimbursed.
11- Memorandum of Understanding - stays at unit
- Submit request for reimbursement within 60 days
after course is completed along with - original grades
- copy of fee statement or letter from school that
states the amount of tuition charged. - Must receive a C or better for undergraduate
work and a B or better for graduate work.
NOTE SM receive reduced STR when receiving 100
ACES TA

Recognizes high school seniors based on
demonstrated leadership, community service and
potential for success in the Minnesota National
Guard.
- Open to high school seniors who are currently
members - of the Minnesota National Guard or become
members - Application deadline is 15 March 2004.
