Title: BioImpedance Analyzer

1
Bio-Impedance Analyzer
  • Virginia Lusk

2
What Is BMI What Does It Tell Us?
  • Body Mass Index - a number that shows body weight
    adjusted for height.
  • BMI is one of many factors related to chronic
diseases (such as heart disease, cancer, or
diabetes). Other contributing factors may be
    diet, physical activity, waist circumference,
blood pressure, blood sugar levels, cholesterol
level and a family history of the disease .

3
How Do We Calculate BMI?
  • Body Mass Index can be calculated using pounds
and inches with the following equation.
  • BMI (            Weight in Pounds
(Height in inches) x (Height in inches))
    x 703
  • For example, a person who weighs 200 pounds and
is 6 feet 2 inches tall has a BMI of 25.7.
  •            200 lbs.            (74 inches) x (74
    inches) x 703 25.7

What Does The Bio-Impedance Analyzer Measure?
  • Body Mass Index
  • BMR Basal Metabolic Rate
  • Body Weight
  • Percentage of Body Fat
  • Impedance
  • Fat Mass
  • Total Body Water
  • Free Fat Mass
  • Recommends Desirable Ranges of Fat and Fat Mass

5
Weight Ranges For BMI
  • Underweight - Below 18.5
  • Normal - 18.5 24.9
  • Overweight - 25.0 29.9
  • Obese - 30.0 Above

6
What Is Obesity?
  • Obesity - Individuals with a BMI of 25 to 29.9
are considered overweight, while individuals with
a BMI of 30 or more are considered obese.
  •    Obesity is defined as an excessively high
amount of body fat or adipose tissue in relation
to lean body mass. The amount of body fat
includes concern for both the distribution of fat
throughout the body and the size of the adipose
tissue deposits. Body fat distribution can be
    estimated by skinfold measures, waist-to-hip
circumference ratios, or techniques such as
    ultrasound, computed tomography, or magnetic
    resonance imaging.
  • These sources are consistent with the U.S.
Dietary Guidelines and with the National Heart,
Lung, and Blood Institute's Clinical Guidelines
on the Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment
of Overweight and Obesity in Adults.

7
What Is Overweight?
  • Overweight means increased body weight in
proportion to height, compared to some standard
    of acceptable weight
  • Overweight may be due to increases in body fat or
    to increases in lean muscle.
  • Desirable weight standards are derived in a
    number of ways
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) - which represents weight
levels associated with the lowest overall risk to
health. Desirable BMI levels may vary with age.
  • By using actual heights and weights measured and
collected on people who are representative of the
U.S. population by the National Center for Health
    Statistics.
  • These sources are consistent with the U.S.
Dietary Guidelines and with the National Heart,
Lung, and Blood Institute's Clinical Guidelines
on the Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment
of Overweight and Obesity in Adults.

What Is Normal?
  • Normal weight range is a BMI between 18.5 24.9.
  • Desirable weight standards are derived in a
    number of ways
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) - which represents weight

health. Desirable BMI levels may vary with age.

of Overweight and Obesity in Adults.

9
What is Underweight?
  • Underweight is represented by a BMI that is
    below 18.5.
  • Individuals who are underweight have a higher
risk of anemia, bone loss, nutrient deficiency,
    heart irregularities, depression osteoporosis in
    later life.
  • People who are in this category need to gain
    weight and improve nutrition.

Conclusion
  • Weight plays an important role in overall health.
  • The information from the Bio Impedance Analyzer
helps us assess our health status.
  • Individuals will now gather the information on
    the Bio Impedance Analyzer.
