Why apply for Discovery Project (DP) Funding?
  • Support excellent fundamental research by
    individuals and teams
  • Foster international competitiveness of
    Australian research
  • Encourage research training in high-quality
    research environments
  • Assist researchers to undertake their research in
    conditions most conductive to achieving best
    results.

What type of Research is supported?
  • DP supports all types of research including
  • Pure basic research experimental/theoretical
    work undertaken to acquire new knowledge without
    looking for long term benefits
  • Strategic basic research experimental/theoretica
    l work undertaken to acquire new knowledge
    directed into specified broad areas that are
    expected to lead to useful discoveries.
  • Applied research which is original work
    undertaken to acquire new knowledge with a
    specific application in view

What type of Research is not supported?
  • Clinical, medical and dental research
  • Production of
  • Teaching materials

Who can apply?
  • Chief Investigator (CI)
  • Partner Investigator
  • ARC Fellow

Early Career Researchers (ECR)
  • Any of the above may be nominated as Early Career
    Researchers
  • PhD or equivalent research qualification
    /experience
  • ECR only Proposals

Chief Investigator (CI)
  • Active researcher is considered the Project
    Leader
  • Must reside in Australia for the full term of the
    grant
  • Derive at least 50 of his/her salary from an
    eligible higher education institution

Partner Investigator
  • Be ineligible as a CI
  • Provide significant cash/in-kind contribution
    from his/her organisation
  • Take significant intellectual responsibility

ARC Fellow
  • Australian Postdoctoral Fellow (APD)
  • Australian Research Fellow (ARF)/Queen Elizabeth
    II Fellow (QEII)
  • Australian Professorial Fellow
  • Must reside in Australia for the full term of the
    grant
  • Must meet eligibility criteria for the type
    sought (more information in Funding Rules)

  • Must be submitted at least 6 weeks prior to the
    external closing date

  • Clinical Medical or Dental Research

What can I apply for?
  • Personnel (salary plus on-costs)
  • ARC Fellowships, Research Associates, Research
    Assistants etc
  • Equipment
  • Maintenance
  • Travel

Level of funding
  • Minimum grant size 20,000 and max 500,000 p/a
    over 5 years.
  • If applying for ARC Fellowship, request for
    salary and on-costs is to be included in the
    budget

Number of Grants and Applications
  • CIs/Fellows may participate in up to 2 DPs
  • Sole CI/Fellows may participate only in 1 DP
  • CIs/Fellows associated with CRC may participate
    only in 1 DP
  • PIs may participate in up to 4 DPs
  • Only 1 proposal may be submitted in respect of a
    particular project in the same round

  • All parties must sign the Certification Page for
    the proposed project to proceed

How do I submit my application?
  • Via the Grant Application Management System
    (GAMS)
  • Submit applications to RS by the internal closing
    date to be advised.
  • All named investigators require a GAMS ID.

  • to obtain an ID.
  • An original and 3 copies of the application is
    required by the Internal closing date.
