What is information governance?
  • Began life in the NHS, mainly relates to
    personal information
  • Access to information
  • Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information Act
  • Information sharing

  • Information security
  • Framework of policies, procedures, protocols,
    standards and guidelines which ensures that all
    information is managed efficiently and securely
    to allow for easy access, collaborative working
    and knowledge sharing

Data Protection Act 1998
  • Does exactly that
  • 8 principles
  • We can share to provide statutory services e.g.
    childrens social care
  • Access to Records Officer
  • Recent research commissioned by the ICO showed
    that people now consider protecting their
    personal information as the second most socially
    important issue above the NHS, national security
    and environmental issues.

Freedom of Information Act 2000
  • Its purpose is to improve the openness and
    transparency of government promote
    accountability for decision-making
  • It provides the public with the right to access
    to non-personal, recorded information held by all
    public authorities
  • There are 23 exemptions a mix of absolute
    exemptions, e.g. personal data, and qualified
    exemptions which are subject to a PI test, e.g.
    commercially sensitive information.

  • What is it?
  • Systematic control of creation ,receipt,
    maintenance, use and disposal of records to

    person, in pursuance of legal obligations or in
    the transaction of business
  • Soyou all do this, all day, every day
