Title: The Wound Care Documentation Project at municipal elder care

1
The Wound Care Documentation Project at municipal
elder care
  • Agentcities Information Day 3
  • Barcelona, February 6-8, 2003
  • Hans Kyhlbäck
  • Blekinge Institute of Technology
  • SWEDEN

2
Purpose of the Wound Care Documentation Project
  • First, with a peer-to-peer system give the
information owners, i.e. the responsible nurses,
a decentralised control of wound care treatment
    information
  • Second, develop a Graphical User Interface that
visualize the progress of the wound-healing
    process

3
Municipal health care and wound treatment
  • Wound Care treatment is one difficult task out of
    many others
  • It is time consuming and takes a lot of patience
in order to provide successful treatment
  • It is percieved that learning and documentation
might be improved by use of digital images

10
Today - Vision
  • Information is stored in binders
  • Information is stored in a distributed network

11
Members of the Large project, February 2003
12
The Large project (PAC004, a regular course at
BTH), next step towards our vision
  • Field study began and digital images was
    introduced
  • First Wound Doc software (HEDVIG) was
    implemented
  • Wound Care Documentation (Large project,
    PAC004, spring 2003)
  • .......
  • .......
  • Future use of digital devices such as laptops
    or other handheld computers

13
The Large project will design and implement a
Peer-to-peer system
  • Seventeen 3rd year students will work in full
    time during spring 2003
  • The Peer-to-peer system will be developed in an
    evolutionary process
  • JXTA is the implementation technology

14
The Large project will apply an Interaction
Design method
  • Find the vocabulary used in the human work
practice and adopt it to the software development
    process
  • Develop the Graphical User Interface (GUI) in
    cooperation with the end users

15
What data do we share?A preliminary model with
two layers
  • 1st layer (personal data and social relations) is
only shared within the care recipient X Peer
    Group.
  • 2nd layer might be shared with all peers in the
    main Peer Group WoundDoc.

16
Authorization layers
  • A) personal data, social relations
  • B) symptom,
  • diagnosis
  • C) instructions

periodical
notes on taken measures
digital images

17
Aspects of our p2p network model
  • Dynamic creation of subgroups
  • Decentralized control
  • Data concistency
  • Discovery mechanism

18
Dynamic creation of subgroups (1)
  • All nodes are parts of the main Peer Group called
    WoundDoc.
  • One subgroup per care recipient (cr A, cr B).
All care recipient groups are created by the
responsible nurse when s(he) create the care
    recipient.
  • A single peer could be a member of several
    different care recipient groups.

19
Dynamic creation of subgroups (2)
  • A single peer is able to send messages to all
other peers within the same Peer Group.
  • Peer 2 in this case is a member of both subgroup
    A and B. If s(he), peer 2, sends a message it
will only be sent to the appropriate subgroup not
both, e.g. if the message is about care recipient
A it will be sent to peer 1.

20
The project will be informed by Developmental
Work Research
  • Data is gathered in ethnographic studies
  • Activity Theory as a theoretical framework
    support analysis and design

21
Artefacts - bandage, etc - digital camera - p2p
network system
Future wound care utilize p2p integrated in the
Activity system
outcome Well treated and the wound successfully
healed
Object Care recipient
Subject a nurse
  • Community
  • -close relatives,
  • - 3, 4 nurses,
  • 3 5 assistant nurses,
  • doctor
  • Rules
  • do documentation work,
  • respect privacy,
  • protect information
  • Division of labour
  • nurse hands on work, documentation, supervise
    treatment
  • assistant nurse make hands on treatment
