Philip II
  • Philip II was the king of Spain from 1556 till
    his death in 1598.
  • He was the son of a Holy Roman Emperor, Charles
    V.
  • Coming into reign he had enormous potential. He
had inherited lands from his uncle, along with a
    vast empire over seas.
  • At the beginning of his rule, there was no strong
monarch in France so Spain was left without a
    major rival on the continent.

3
King of Spain
  • Philip II had 4 wives in his life time.
  • Maria of Portugal
  • Mary I of England
  • Elisabeth of Valois
  • Anne

4
Spanish Armada
  • After the death of Mary I of England, Philip
asked Elizabeth, Marys half sister, to be his
bride. She refused and this angered him.
  • Elizabeth and Philip were in conflict over many
things. A major conflict was religion.
  • Elizabeth was angry at the way Philip persecuted
    protestants under his control.
  • Philip was mad at the way Elizabeth forced
English Catholics to attend protestant church
    services.
  • Building the Spanish Armada took a lot of
preparation, but by July 1588 it left Spain to
    conquer England.
  • Of the 25,000 men that left on the Armada about
more than half never returned home.
  • The defeat of the Armada broke the power of the
nation that once owned half of the world.

The End
  • After the marriage refusal of Elizabeth I of
England, he married Elisabeth of Valois.
  • Elisabeth was originally promised to his son,
Carlos, but Philip was never close to his son.
  • He thought his son was plotting against him so he
    imprisoned Carlos in his room.
  • Shortly after Carlos died, by starving himself in
protest. People assumed Philip murdered him.
  • Elisabeth didnt provide him with a heir so he
married Anne, his niece, and eventually had an
    heir, Philip III.

6
Philip II
  • At one time Philip was known as the most powerful
    man in Europe.
  • He ruled Spain at a time when many nations of
    Europe feared their power.
  • He also set the once powerful nation of Spain
    into a decline.
