• A complex system of membrane bound tubes and
  flattened sacs extending throughout the cytoplasm
• Rough ER with ribosomes attached on the surface
• Smooth ER without ribosomes

• Intra-cellular transport system ER is connected
  with the cell membrane and the nuclear membrane,
  facilitating movements of materials from one part
  of cell to another
• Isolate and transport proteins synthesized by
  ribosomes
• Provides large area to attach enzymes for
  biochemical reactions
• Provide supplementary mechanical support
