  •  Question 5
  • Employers must ensure that supervisors are
competent to protect the safety of the workers
    they supervise.
  • This statement is True
  • You answered false
  • Your answer is incorrect. The material below will
prepare you for the next time you challenge this
    section.
  •  Your employer, your supervisor and you all have
legal responsibilities to make sure the workplace
is healthy and safe. Occupational health and
safety legislation requires that every person in
the workplace do their part to ensure a safe and
    healthy environment. Duties and responsibilities
for the employer, supervisor, worker and others
are contained within the law. Employers have
overall responsibility for the safety of persons
in the workplace. Their extensive legal duties
and responsibilities under health and safety
    legislation reflect this overall responsibility.
The duties include setting out policies and
    procedures, ensuring training, sharing
information and making provisions for protective
devices and ensuring theyre used or worn. They
have to ensure they appoint competent
    supervisors, establish medical programs where
required, form and maintain health and safety
committees (if required in the jurisdiction),
post certain pieces of information in the
workplace and the list goes on and on. It should
be clear that the employer has a direct
responsibility to make sure you dont get hurt at
work. Heres a sample of the employers
responsibilities aimed at making your work safe
    Employers shall (among other responsibilities)
  • Make sure that required health and safety
training is given to you. Make sure that you
have proper safety equipment and are trained to
use it safely. Make sure your supervisors and
you are aware of any known hazards in the work
and that supervisors are prepared to ensure the
work is carried out safely. Take every
precaution reasonable in the circumstances to
    protect you.
  • Supervisors are the people who have day-to-day
responsibility to ensure the work gets done and
that it gets done safely. In small companies, the
employer may also be the supervisor. In larger
organizations, the supervisor may have different
titles, and there may be other layers of
supervision that have titles such as team
leader, group coordinator or similar terms. If
those persons have charge of the workplace or
authority over a worker, they are a supervisor.
Heres a sample of supervisor responsibilities
  • Make sure that you (the worker) follow the law
and company safety rules. Make sure that you
work safely and use any required safety
equipment. Advise you of the existence of
potential or actual danger to your health and
safety that they are aware of. Take every
precaution reasonable in the circumstances to
    protect you.
  • What does it MEAN to be a GOOD SUPERVISOR?
